WF Baptist $3M addition permitted

33 new homes underway in town

Focus Design Builders of Wake Forest has the contract for the Wake Forest Baptist Church’s new $3 million fellowship hall and education center behind and near the beautiful church with its distinctive dome.

The new building will have almost 20,000 square feet, and the fees total $31,000. The church and its current and future additions are on the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary campus, and the seminary had to agree to the extension of church property. Since the church is on the campus its address is 130 South Wingate Street although it has been occupying the corner where South Avenue meets Front Street since 1914. Focus Design Builders was founded in 2010 by Paul Eitel, Craig Hedgepeth and David Williams Jr.

On the residential side, local home builders pulled permits for 26 single-family homes and six townhouses during July, and one mobile home was placed in Wellington Trailer Park.

With 179 single-family home permits issued through the end of July, the town is on track to add about the same number of new homes as in all of last year when there permits were issued for 363 homes. So far in 2014 there have been only 20 permits for townhouses; in 2013 105 townhouse permits were issued.

The six townhouses will all be built by Crestview Builders on Heritage Links Drive. The fees for each were $4,551.69, they will all have 2,892 sq. ft., and the value for each is $82,000.

  1. While I understand the need for WFBC to expand, it comes at an unbelievable and sad cost. The removal of the beautiful trees from the property has forever changed the look of our town.

It sickens me as I drive around the Seminary daily. More concerning, is the plan to build an access road and parking spaces behind the old rock wall from the Archway to just east of North Main.

It is said the church must replace each tree removed with three others. I question, however, the type of tree which will be set in exchange. Will we be seeing a beautiful Magnolia or Oak replaced with a Crape Myrtle or other small tree?

Even if these trees are replaced, the vast majority of us will never live to see them grow to maturity to stand tall and proud as those which have been removed.

I will simply never forget this incredible loss. It is, and always shall be, a shame.
