During the Wake Forest Town Board meeting July 15, Police Chief Jeff Leonard told the mayor and commissioners the police department had decided to forego the annual carnival and instead return to the original intent of National Night Out, which this year will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5.
“We want to get back out into the community,” Leonard said.
The department is encouraging neighborhoods, homeowners associations and other community groups to sponsor an event such as a block party, an ice cream social or a cookout to promote neighborhood spirit and provide an opportunity for police officers to visit and share crime and drug prevention tips. The goal is safe, healthy neighborhoods.
National Night Out was created to help police-community crime prevention partnerships through increased crime and drug prevention awareness, support for and participation in local anti-crime programs and strong neighborhood spirit.
Any neighborhood or community group interested in participating in or hosting a National Night Out event is invited to contact Lt. L. Danforth at 919-435-9618. For more information about NNO, visit http://natw.org/.
One Response
As president of the Wake Forest Lions CLub, I did contact Lt.Danforth and had an interesting conversation about the National Night Out opportunities in Wake Forest. Since this is a new concept of having community and home owner association sponsored acivities, the response has been slow for this year. However, since the concept is to have invividual community service clubs sponsor an activity, more long range planning can take place which should result in more opportunities for next year.
