There will be a different atmosphere and a different format Friday night, Sept. 11, during Art After Hours in downtown Wake Forest. The evening event from 5 to 9 p.m. will remember the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It is called A Night to Remember, A Chance to Serve, and it will honor the many rescuers and volunteers who served selflessly that day and for months afterward by providing ways for area people to volunteer with the town and local organizations.
At 6 p.m. there will be a brief program at Jones Plaza, the corner of South White Street and East Jones Avenue, with remarks by Mayor Vivian Jones and performances by local choirs.
During the evening there will be a supply drive to benefit the Veterans Medical Center in Durham, a canned food drive for Tri-Area Ministry, live music and a children’s activity. People from area civic groups and community organizations will be in booths to explain their activities. Attendees will be able to meet several local World War II veterans and to sign an oversized greeting card that later will be delivered to the VA hospital.
If you go to http://www.wakeforestnc.gov/a-night-to-remember-a-chance-to-serve.aspx you will find the supply lists the Durham VA Medical Center and the Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry need.
The downtown studios, shops and restaurants will be open and Wake Forest Downtown will offer free horse and carriage rides.
At Sunflower Studio, just a few steps down East Jones Avenue from South White, three artists will have their recent works on display: Billy Farmer, Diana Cook and Marti King, Their works cover a range of styles and mediums.
