South Main, 298 apartments on Tuesday agenda

Based on the draft agenda which was provided last week, the Wake Forest Town Board will face an agenda without drama except, possibly, the two planning items which the planning board recommended on Sept. 1: a rezoning of almost 3 acres between South Main and Mangum Avenue for a Wendy’s and other commercial uses and a master plan for the 298 Legacy Wake Forest apartments on 29 acres between Durham Road, Debarmore Street and the N.C. 98 Bypass.

Items could be added to the agenda by Tuesday, Sept. 15, when the town board meets at 7 p.m. in the second floor meeting room in town hall.

The planning board had a difficult time agreeing about the Main Street-Mangum Avenue rezoning from residential to commercial because of concerns about how the traffic and commercial use would impact the neighborhoods on the other side of Mangum and to the east. The final vote was 5 to 4 as were a flurry of other votes earlier. And planning board members had a lot of questions about the buffers and the plantings on the buffers while neighbors had their own questions. Although board members and neighbors seemed in agreement that a traffic signal would be needed at the project’s main entrance on Durham Road opposite Jones Wynd, the main street through the Crenshaw Manor subdivision, Planning Director Chip Russell waned them there was no guarantee the state Department of Transportation would install one. That vote to approve was unanimous.

After the reading of proclamations – Public Power Week and Language Learning Weeks in Schools – the board will hold two public hearings to permanently close a portion of Oak Grove Church Road and Gilcrest Farm Road because of road realignments in the Traditions subdivision and a portion of Park Lane which is unused.

They will accept a petition for annexation of nine acres in the Reynolds Mill subdivision and agree to temporarily close part of South White Street each second Friday between April and September for Friday Night on White. They are asked to rescind the ordinance which makes Rock Spring Road one way between 2 and 3:30 p.m. every weekday, to waive the ordinance about public consumption of alcohol (apparently for some event), and to amend the ordinance about panhandling.

They will also be asked to approve an amendment to the fee schedule for the Renaissance Centre.

There was no notice about a closed session in the draft agenda.
