South Main crash meeting Thursday

If you were asked where you are most likely to be involved in a vehicle crash, would you name South Main Street away from the Capital Boulevard intersection? Probably not.

But the part of South Main from Wake Drive to Star Road is where there were 131 vehicle crashes in the five years between July 2010 and June 2015 as drivers were turning into businesses and attractions such as Golden Corral, Merchants Tire & Auto Center, Exxon and Quality Food Mart, Taco Bell, North Wake Animal Hospital,

The Town of Wake Forest with the North Carolina Department of Transportation want to make that road safer for all drivers. DOT has a number of road improvements it is proposing, and on Thursday, Sept. 10, local residents are asked to attend an open house at the Wake Forest Town Hall to see the improvements, ask questions and make comments. The meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the ground floor meeting room adjacent to the Taylor Street entrance. It will be an informal, open house meeting with no formal presentations, and people are invited to drop in at any time during those two hours. People who live in the area and business owners are especially encouraged to attend.

You will see diagrams of the collisions along with the conceptual design. Visit www.wakeforestnc.gov/public-meeting-south-main-street.aspx to see the collision diagrams. The project to increase safety is unfunded now and not scheduled,, but officials said the status could change because the design requires only a small additional amount of right of way.

DOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who wish to participate in this hearing. Anyone requiring special services should contact Ms. Anamika Laad at 919-707-6072 or alaad@ncdot.gov  as early as possible so that arrangements can be made.

Persons who speak Spanish and do not speak English, or have a limited ability to read, speak or understand English, may receive interpretive services upon request prior to the meeting by calling 1-800-481-6494.

Along with the website listed above, you can ask additional questions before the meeting of Engineer Kelly Becker at 919-773-2890 or klbecker@ncdot.gov.
