Neighbors win round one

Tuesday night the neighbors along and near South Allen Road won at the planning board level as they quietly but forcefully described why they do not want seven attached townhouses built in the southwest corner where Elm Avenue meets South Allen. A second item on the board’s agenda, a request to rezone 100 acres owned by George Mackie for single-family lots and approve the master plan, was postponed at the request of the owner and his developer, Bob Zumwalt with the John R. McAdams Company. Zumwalt asked for the delay “because of a few problems that need to be resolved with the sale of the property.” It will be heard in April along with the request for annexation. The South Allen neighbors had help from planning board members and some town commissioners. Planning board member Thad Juszczak questioned Assistant Planning Director Charlie Yokley about the planning staff analysis which said:

Center asks to extend loan

The Wake Forest Board of Commissioners and others crowded into a conference room at the Wireless Research Center of North Carolina Tuesday night for their work session, hearing about the center’s progress since it was founded in 2010, then touring the building and returning for a brief meeting focused on the center’s request to change the payback terms for the $975,000 line of credit from the town. Gerard Hayes, the center’s president, with Larry Steffann, the general manager, said the center had borrowed $948,950 from the line of credit with the last draw on June 3, 2013. They had made 30 payments toward the principal and interest, and the balance is now $94,584. The center has about a month’s worth of reserve funds with the aim of having a three-month reserve. Their proposal is to continue to repay the line of credit with monthly payments of $4,750 through the end

O’Donnell retiring April 1

Wake Forest’s Deputy Town Manager Roe O’Donnell announced Monday that he will retire on April 1. He told Town Manager Kip Padgett, Mayor Vivian Jones, the town commissioners and department heads on Friday. He said he plans to spend time with his wife, Karen, and their family, and he also may act as a consultant. O’Donnell came to Wake Forest in 1993 and in the 23 years since has overseen or managed the town’s public works, police, engineering, inspections, management information systems and Renaissance Centre. He was a key player during the water-sewer merger with the City of Raleigh, tracking the finances and the required projects. He also oversaw the redesign of South Franklin Street and the town’s first roundabout where South Main Street meets Durham Road/N.C. 98. He will be missed. “The citizens of Wake Forest are losing a wonderful public servant,” Padgett said. “Roe has effectively served the

Brief Bits

Some of you may be storing a few bags of books for the Friends of the Wake Forest Public Library’s Book Sale. However, Friends’ President Jennifer Davis has announced the board’s decision to cancel the book sale this year. Cancellation of the sale is a result of a couple of factors. The board has four vacancies it has been unable to fill and membership in the Friends has decreased. Both factors result in inadequate support from the membership for the labor-intensive book sale. The Friends will in the coming months be evaluating how the group can best serve the local library, which is due for closure and total renovation in 2018, and the people of the Wake Forest area. * * * * Coming up on Saturday, March 12, is an event that will benefit a worthwhile and enthusiastic local youth group. It is the third annual Battalion Bazaar for the

The Backsliders entertain March 19

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will continue the “Rockin’ the Forest” music series with hardcore honky-tonk music by The Backsliders on Saturday, March 19, at 8 p.m. According to The Backsliders website, the band was formed in 1992 when Steve Howell and Chip Robinson began playing as a guitar-mandolin duet in Raleigh. They soon found themselves wanting to amp up their sound in the spirit of the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Rolling Stones – rock and roll dudes playing country-tinged tunes with just the right amount of attitude. Enter Danny Kurtz on bass, Brad Rice on electric guitar and Jeff Dennis on drums. The line-up of two electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass and drums became The Backsliders calling card, and the band began drawing legions of local fans to their frenetic live shows. With Rice now in Austin, TX, the new line-up features Greg Rice on keyboards.

Spiff up with Flower Power

The nonprofit community-service Wake Forest Woman’s Club must raise the funds it uses to do good work around Wake Forest. One fundraising effort has members baking and crafting to present tasty and appealing items for sale at Wake Forest High School’s Battalion Bazaar in the school gym on March 12. At the same event, they’ll “dig in” to sell flower bulbs, seeds and plants through Flower Power, a nationally recognized collaboration “planted” by two mail-order gardening companies and now owned by Vesey’s Seeds Ltd. Flower Power allows clubs to sell quality products with the ease of online purchasing, while earning half the profits – profits that Wake Forest Woman’s Club will “plow” into the community through service projects including school tutoring and proctoring, free books in laundromats, an annual scholarship contest for area students, support of the military and first responders, assistance at town events and supporting local helping programs
