RST has its river crossing permit

RST Fiber has received a permit to cross the Neuse River near Old Falls of the Neuse Road from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but the Shelby company has not disclosed when it will resume work installing high-speed fiber optic cable in Wake Forest. There was no answer to an email about future plans this week. The company also has permission from the town for a small building on South Taylor Street to house equipment. When work resumes, RST will use Duke Energy Progress poles to attach its conduit to cross the river. They will then pull the cable through the conduit and be able to energize the system. Before work halted, RST had installed cable in part of the Crenshaw Manor subdivision. There will be updates in future weeks.

No post offices will be closed

Although there was a rumor this past week that one or two local post offices were to be closed and consolidated with Wake Forest’s, that is not true. “We are not closing any post offices at this time,” Monica M. Coachman, the media spokesperson for North Carolina for the U.S. Postal Service, said Tuesday. However, she said, there will be some internal changes in the Youngsville and Wake Forest post offices. “The carriers at Youngsville Post Office will be moved to Wake Forest Post Office as part of a Delivery Unit Optimization (DUO),” Coachman wrote in a lengthy email after the telephone call from the Gazette. “DUO involves relocating letter carriers out of local post offices, stations and/or branches and consolidating them into larger, centralized delivery offices or hubs,” she wrote. “The ‘hubs’ (or larger offices) have excess space inside and out and can accommodate increased personnel, workload and transportation.

Openings for volunteers on advisory boards

As of Tuesday evening there is a new opportunity to serve on a town advisory board. The Wake Forest commissioners agreed to establish a Technology Advisory Board. And of course the Cultural Resources Advisory Board was established very recently. This is the time for people who are interested in helping the Wake Forest community to apply for open seats on the boards because the three-year terms end in December. Each board except the Board of Adjustment and the Design Review Board has nine members with staggered terms. Other than the two boards named above, the boards with openings this year are the Cemetery, Public Art, Design Review, Greenways, Historic Preservation, Planning, Senior Center and Urban Forestry. You can find the application for the boards on line at http://www.wakeforestnc.gov/advisory-boards.aspx as well as the information about each board. Some, like the Historic Preservation Commission, have residency requirements. Applications must be submitted by

There will be free screenings, health information, door prizes and more. Another star should go on Friday, Oct. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. when Raleigh Radiology will provide free bone density screening. Mayor gets national nod for planning

A national organization, the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, has selected Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones to participate in this fall’s round of regional sessions about city design. In early November she will join seven other mayors at the Florida Center for Community Design and Research at the University of South Florida in Tampa. “I’m really excited about this,” Jones said during Tuesday evening’s work session. Since 1986, the Mayors’ Institute has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities. The group holds the three regional sessions three and four times a year. Right now, Jones is working with the town’s planning department to begin preparing the presentation for her project, which will be to expand the concept of the South White Streetscape to the entire downtown Renaissance area. “They want a project that is not far enough along so they

Brief Bits

Wake Foresters, particularly those who grew up here with him, have always been proud of I. Beverly Lake Jr., the retired former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. And today, Sept. 3, was another reminder of how he has greatly helped the state and furthered the cause of human rights. Lake’s picture was on the front page of The News & Observer standing behind Henry McCullum just as McCullum and his half-brother, Leon Brown, were declared innocent of the horrific 1983 murder of Sabrina Buie in Robeson County. Justice Lake was instrumental in creating the N.C. Innocence Inquiry Commission, part of the state court system. Justice Lake will be in town later this month to moderate a forum about World War II through the memories of four local men who served across the globe. The forum, sponsored by the Wake Forest Historical Association, is free and will be
