Brief Bits

Wake Foresters, particularly those who grew up here with him, have always been proud of I. Beverly Lake Jr., the retired former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. And today, Sept. 3, was another reminder of how he has greatly helped the state and furthered the cause of human rights. Lake’s picture was on the front page of The News & Observer standing behind Henry McCullum just as McCullum and his half-brother, Leon Brown, were declared innocent of the horrific 1983 murder of Sabrina Buie in Robeson County.

Justice Lake was instrumental in creating the N.C. Innocence Inquiry Commission, part of the state court system.

Justice Lake will be in town later this month to moderate a forum about World War II through the memories of four local men who served across the globe. The forum, sponsored by the Wake Forest Historical Association, is free and will be held at the Wake Forest Historical Museum from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
