Varied art on display Friday night

In Friday night’s monthly art stroll, Art After Hours, visitors to downtown Wake Forest will find a wide variety of art media, sometimes by the same artist.

Start at the new Artist Loft and Gallery above the Wake Forest Coffee Company where two artists have just joined the group, Nicki Morin Black and Mary Margaret Steele. Black works in encaustics, acrylics, stained glass mosaics, watercolor and mixed media. Steele works in watercolor and oils.

Lindy Muse, the featured artist this month at the Artists’ Nook at Mimosa, uses watercolor and batik on rice paper. “My art soothes my soul. It has been a special part of my life and will be, always. Those quiet moments with the brush have gotten me through good times and bad. I am so thankful for the special joy it brings me and the ability to share with others.”

There are many new works by the resident artists, Mary Benejam, Trish Nardozzi and Linda Martin, and there will be live music around 7:30 p.m.

She uses only one medium, photography, but people will be delighted by Sue McGlothin’s exhibit at The Cotton Company with all her photos of North Carolina framed in hand-crafted frames made by her husband. Many people know her work already, especially her award-winning slow exposures that she has been displaying and selling in her booth at The Cotton Company. Refreshments will be served including North Carolina wines.

For a change of pace, stop by Next Consignment Boutique where owner Pam Jay will host Slabtown Holiday, the combination of Wake Forest native Samuel Garner on guitar and accordion and Raleigh native Dayne Shelor on guitar and perhaps fiddle. “Their style leans toward interpreting modern songs with a mix if traditional or old mountain tunes, but always with the goal of pure enjoyment. They have fun performing and hope others enjoy familiar songs done in a slightly different way,” Jay wrote. The two will begin playing in front of Next Consignment Boutique about 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

Walk down Jones Avenue to the little blue bungalow that houses the Sunflower Studio & Gallery where you will find an exhibit featuring two accomplished artists, Everett Adelman and Eric McRay. Adelman will display his abstract watercolors; McRay’s work is inspired by pop art. There will be a reception and refreshments.

Seven artists are in residence at Sunflower: Owner Linda Burrell, Gayle Blackerby, Nancy Farantatos, Barbara Crockett, Delphine Pelller, Margaret Roth and Cyndy Wolf.

Art After Hours is sponsored by Wake Forest Downtown which provides for the free horse and carriage rides.
