Snow, sleet stymie spring veggies

The Wake Forest Farmers Market vegetable vendors have been trying – last week there was fresh spinach and scallions, among other winter vegetables – but the snow, freezing rain and sleet from Monday night through Tuesday plus overnight temperatures in the single digits and the possibility of another wintry blast Saturday probably will defeat all their efforts.

However, you can count on a variety of meats, honey and honey products, baked goods, cheese and other local raised/produced items from a number of vendors when you visit the market in the Renaissance Plaza on Brooks Street from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 21. Eggs are possible though they are always chancy in the winter; hens are not fond of short cold days.

Walk Ahead Farms, which could not offer its bacon last week because of a labeling issue at the processor, is expected to have it this week along with other pork cuts and chorizo and andouille sausage.

The website says July 14, an optimistic date, but the name of the musician is accurate, “the groovy“““““ Willie Hill.”

The market will be open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon through March. It will return to summer hours, 8 a.m. to noon, in April.

See the market on Facebook, take a look at all the vendors and their wares as well as special events at www.wakeforestfarmersmarket.org or call 919-671-9269 if you need information.
