Rogers bridge work delayed two weeks

Monday, June 27, is the new planned start date to replace the structurally deficient bridge over Smith Creek on Rogers Road, the state Department of Transportation announced Monday, June 6. The work had been scheduled to begin Monday, June 13, but DOT said the recent rainy weather had delayed the contractor, Blythe Construction, from completing another project, causing the delay in Wake Forest. Blythe will still have 135 days to complete the job of reconstructing the bridge.

Blythe will also widen the part of Rogers Road from Hope Lutheran Church to the Forestville Road/Heritage Lake Road intersection to five lanes with sidewalks work requested by the Town of Wake Forest, which will pay $1,221,848.79 for that work to be added to the bridge contract. The widening may take longer than the bridge reconstruction; if so, the bridge will open for traffic and the widening work will be completed with lane closures as necessary.

The town has released an updated detour map which suggests drivers use South Main Street, the N.C. 98 Bypass and Heritage Lake Road to reach Rogers Road on the west and north and a combination of South Main Street, Ligon Mill Road, Burlington Mills Road, U.S. 401, Young Street in Rolesville, Averette Road, Jones Dairy Road, and Chalk Road on the south and east.

  1. $41 Million seems more like the total contract cost instead of the cost for the widening and sidewalks as noted in the article.
