Private school administrator charged

Wake Forest Police have arrested a school administrator for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from a private Christian school.

On Oct. 7 police arrested and charged Sue Horton Romano, 2700 Durham Road, Wake Forest, with embezzling more than $11,000 from Rejoice Community School between February and June 2014. Rejoice Community School was formerly located at 407 Brooks St.

The Police Department’s four-month investigation began after the school’s founder, Norma Jean McKelvey, reported a number of unaccounted bank deposits and withdrawals.

Romano is out on bail, and a court date is pending.

Since June Romano has been affiliated with Rejoice!, a private school of education and performing arts, located at 237 Friendship Chapel Road.

In recent days Wake Forest Police have received inquiries from concerned residents concerning the legitimacy of Rejoice Community School and Rejoice!. Rejoice Community School was registered with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (NCDNPE) on Oct. 31, 2013, while Rejoice! was registered Sept. 11, 2014.

Parents and guardians considering enrolling their children in a private school are responsible for ensuring the educational institution is registered with NCDNPE.
