For Old Times Sake celebrates five years

Creaky floors, squeaky doors, golden-age music and a white tin ceiling are among the characteristics one first notices when walking into For Old Times Sake antique store in historic downtown Wake Forest. The 1920s building fits what is sold within its walls – vintage items, unusual pieces, collectibles, furniture, home décor, toys, gifts and whatnots. On June 19, the space will turn festive as For Old Times Sake celebrates its fifth anniversary with cake, door prizes and a ribbon cutting.

“We opened in 2009, during the economic downturn and we survived,” says Phillip Cashwell, who owns the store with his wife, Laura. “We’ve always loved old things. My interest was sparked as a child when I would go to antique sales with my dad who was an auctioneer,” he adds.

Married for 32 years, the Cashwells have enjoyed antiquing together and are thankful they’ve been able to turn a passion into a business. They both agree their favorite thing about owning an antique store is working with each other in downtown Wake Forest.

The anniversary celebration will begin at noon on Thursday, June 19, with a ribbon cutting and cake.  In honor of the milestone, the store will offer $5 off any purchase over $25 on that day. Throughout the week, visitors to the store can enter a drawing to win a $50 For Old Times Sake gift certificate and a Guess the Antique  contest for a chance to win a nostalgic tin sign or a $10 in-store gift certificate. All prize winners will be announced in the store and on the For Old Times Sake Facebook page on Sunday, June 22.

“Wake Forest is a great community to work and live.  We’ve enjoyed watching the town evolve and grow in the last five years just like For Old Times Sake,” said Laura Cashwell. “We reached this five-year milestone because of the support from our customers and other downtown merchants .We are so thankful that people continue to come back and shop.”

While the town was implementing its 2012 streetscape construction project which shut down part of their storefront area, For Old Times Sake doubled its space by expanding upstairs to the building’s second floor.  This added space is now used for antique dealers and consignors who lease from the Cashwells, bringing a greater diversity of items for customers to browse and buy. The Cashwells consider adding this space to be one of the best decisions they’ve made in the store’s five-year history.

“We look forward to celebrating the past five years on June 19 with the public,” says Phillip. “Then we’ll start planning our 10th year anniversary celebration for 2019 as we continue to grow.”
