Jake Whitaker

Jake Whitaker, a senior at Appalachian State, died unexpectedly in a car accident on January 22, 2015, at the age of 21.

Jake is survived by his parents, Dale and Jeannette Whitaker; his grandparents, David and Joyce Smith; his half-sisters, Michelle Kenney and husband, Brad, of Siloam, and Erin Whitaker and husband, David, of Ararat; his forever girlfriend, Kenna Cupp; his uncle, Scott Smith and wife, Val, of Winter Haven, Florida; his nephews, Brandon Kenney and Devin Whitaker; his niece, Savannah Kenney; and numerous cousins, great aunts and great uncles. He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Fred and Ruth Whitaker.

Jake was born in Raleigh on June 8, 1993, to Dale and Jeannette Whitaker. He graduated with honors from Wake Forest-Rolesville High School in 2011. Jake was a senior at Appalachian State University, pursuing a double major in chemistry and biology while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduating with his undergraduate degree, Jake was planning to attend North Carolina State University in pursuit of his master’s degree and PhD.

Jake loved the outdoors from the North Carolina mountains to the sandy shores of Topsail Island. He enjoyed exploring nature, hiking and bicycling. He had a passion for music and playing his guitar. His love for music and art led him to finding true love with Kenna Cupp. Jake loved to travel with his family, visiting Ireland, England, Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland, and Belgium. An incredibly intelligent young scientist, he held a position at ASU as a research student, as well as an organic chemistry and biochemistry tutor. He was a member of Grace Haven Baptist Fellowship and participated in several mission trips and humanitarian work.  Jake was known as the glue among his friends. Jake was the pride and joy of his parents, and they considered him the model son.  He was his Nana and Paw-Paw’s bright and shining star.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Monday morning, January 26, 2015, at Youngsville Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 2015 at the Stanford Methodist Church Cemetery in Siloam. Rev. Dick Graves officiated at both services.

Seth Robert Tabor

Franklinton

Seth Robert Tabor, 25, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2014. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on July 18, 1989, and was a 2008 graduate of South Granville High School. After high school Seth joined the United States Air Force, where he was currently stationed at Moody Air Force Base as a Avionics Specialist and served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

A celebration of Seth’s life was held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 25, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church with military honors.

Seth is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Debra Manion of Franklinton; sister, Shauna Rafferty, Coast Guard StationSheboyganWisconsin; brother, Curtis Manion of Rome, New York; grandparents, Ivy and Pete Rogers of Fairlee, Vermont, and Ray and Kelly Tabor of Pittsford, Vermont; aunts and uncles, Shari and Bill Collins of Royalton, Vermont, Kati and Brian Mullan of Raleigh, Lt. Col. Randall (ret.) Air Force and Magda of Yorktown, Virginia, and Carol and Mike Lawson of Durham; best friend, Joseph Wilson of Franklinton; special influence, Darryl Wilson of Wake Forest; numerous cousins and extended family.

Mable F. Hoyle

Mable Franklin Hoyle, 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Mable was born August 12, 1929, in Vance County and was a devoted member of Unity Baptist Church in Youngsville.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, January 26, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Mable is survived by her twin sister, Mattie Hayes of Durham; her children,, Ann Duncan of Henderson, Ruth Garver of Garner, Clifton Hoyle (Judy) of Wake Forest, Carolyn Pernell of Wake Forest, and Rachel Shelton (Lee) of Louisburg; 19 grandchildren/step-grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren/step-great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren/step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin, Herman Franklin, Furman Franklin, Pete Franklin, George Franklin, Jesse Franklin, Lila Newton, and Virgie Blackmon; her children, Edith Ayscue and John Hoyle; and by three of her grandchildren.

Juanita Keith Powell

Juanita Keith Powell, 86, died Friday, January 23, 2015, at her home. Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the late Frank and Alma Keith and was a life-long resident of Wake Forest. She was retired from Westinghouse after 26 years of service and was married to Roy T. Powell who preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Wiggs officiating. Burial was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Powell is survived by her daughters, Edna Lynn Powell of Raleigh and Cheryl Powell Kinney and husband, Stacy, of Clayton; sons, Larry Powell and wife, Frances, of Wake Forest, Frank Powell of Raleigh and Richard Powell and wife, Elizabeth, of Concord; brother, Edwin Keith and wife, Marlene, of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C.; sister-in-law, Margaret Keith of Wake Forest; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Helen Wilder Carter

Helen Wilder Carter, 98, passed away Sunday morning, January 25, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Thomas Frederick Wilder and Janie Etheridge Wilder, and was a member of Franklinton Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 2015, at Franklinton Baptist Church. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her daughter, Len Carter Jackson and husband, Dorsey, of Franklinton; son, Tommy Carter and wife, Patsy, of Franklinton; grandchildren, Lance Carter, Brandy Richmon, April Blalock, Jeremy Jackson and Jamie Jackson Martin; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Jackson Jr., Catherine, Caleb and Ryan Blalock, Skylar and Carson Richmon and Libby Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Carter Jr., and by her sister, Dorothy Simmons.

Eunice Moss Alford

Eunice Moss Alford, 86, died Monday, January 26, 2015. She was born in Vance County, the daughter of the late Penola and Robert Thomas Moss.

Mrs. Alford was married to Judas Alford who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. She was employed with Westinghouse Meter Plant until she retired in 1988 and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

A memorial service was held at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning, January 28, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary McNair officiating.

Mrs. Alford is survived by her daughter, Betsy Baily and husband, Benjamin; a grandson, Derek Bailey; her sisters, Rachel Garrett of Kittrell and JoAnn Loy of Gibsonville; and several nieces and nephews.

Eunice found great pleasure in spending time with her grandson Derek when she took him to school and to football practice.

Harvey Joe Mangum

Harvey Joe Mangum, 75, of 5720 Barham Siding Road, died Wednesday evening, January 21, 2015, at his residence. Mr. Mangum was born in Wake County, the son of the late Harold Mangum and Nellie Boyd Mangum. He was retired from NC Department of Corrections as an Inmate Laundry Supervisor.

Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, January 24, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Mr. Mangum is survived by his daughter, Edna “Punkin” Floyd and her husband, Tommy, and granddaughter, Haley “Bubba” Floyd and Aaron Jones, all of Wake Forest; special family, Benny and Connie Moody. He was also Pa to Alissa, Christopher, Jared and Jordan Moody. Many other special nieces, nephews and family friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Barham Mangum; brother, Donald Mangum; and sisters, Carolyn Jay, Peggy Williams and Dorothy Caulder.

Edith Dare Kearney Toler, 92, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Alfonzo Kearney and Adelle Blackley Kearney, and was married to Mangum Breeze Toler, who preceded her in death.

Funeral services were be held at 11 o’clock Saturday morning January 24, 2015, at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. William Ausley officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Toler is survived by her daughters, Wanda Toler of Franklinton, Connie Woodlief and husband, Parks, of Franklinton, Jane Roberts of Franklinton, and Kathy Landerman and husband, Dick, of Durham; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Michael Martin Lipsky Sr.

Michael Martin Lipsky Sr., 86, passed away Saturday evening, January 24, 2015, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Martin Lipsky and Genevieve Reisner Lipsky.

Mr. Lipsky was employed by the Archdiocese of Baltimore for 24 years prior to relocating to North Carolina. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 20 years where he became a Fourth Degree Knight. He served as a Docent for the North Carolina Museum of History for two decades. He was also a member of the Lake Lynn Senior Group and the Grey Foxes Bowling League for 20 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 o’clock Friday, January 30, 2015, at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Wake Forest.

Mr. Lipsky is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillian A. Lipsky; children, Michael M. Lipsky Jr.  and wife, Tecla, of Essex, Maryland, Tom Lipsky and wife, Betsy, of Raleigh, Brian Lipsky and wife, Tanya, of Hampstead, Maryland, Margaret Estep of Wake Forest and Patrick Lipsky of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sister, Mary Woytowitz of Baltimore, Maryland; and eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with one on the way. Mr. Lipsky was preceded in death by his brother, John Lipsky, and sisters, Anna Miller and Theresa Rutkowski.

Betty Richardson Holt, 78, died Monday, January 26, 2015, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Ivie Marie Johnson Richardson and Orien Waddell Richardson, and was married to Caswell Milton Holt, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Holt was retired from the NCDMV after 30 years of service.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, January 31, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.

Mrs. Holt is survived by her daughter, Deborah Holt Flynn and husband, Randy, of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Victoria Flynn and David Flynn of Wake Forest; sister, Reca Clark of Florida; and brother, Joe Bill Richardson and wife, Lorraine, of Knightdale. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Coleman.

Jessie Kathleen Bailey, 77, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Franklin Oaks Nursing Center. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Ethel Hollifield Honeycutt and John Honeycutt, and was married to James Clifton Bailey, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Bailey was a member of New Light Church of God.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, January 29, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodney Harp officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bailey is survived by her daughter, Karen Marlene Lindsey of Wake Forest; granddaughter, Renee Lindsey-Coe of Youngsville; grandson, Ray Wilkinson IV and wife, Liz, of Durham; and three great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Madison, and Amelia.

Jason Jeremy Goss, 36, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2015, at Duke University Hospital in Durham. He was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania, the son of Randolph Goss and the late Mary Ann Sernik Goss.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Mr. Goss is survived by his wife, Janae Goss; his children, Carter, Addison and Sawyer Goss; father and step-mother, Randy and Sheryl Goss of Kinsman, Ohio; sisters, Andrea Chitester of Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, and Sheryl Weyant of Lauren Springs, Pennsylvania; and grandmother, Mary Jane Sernik of Greenville, Pennsylvania.
