David S. Cook Sr.

Raleigh

David S. Cook Sr. 89, died Wednesday, December 24, 2014. He was born in Eden, the son of the late Bertha Spessard Cook and John S. Cook. Mr. Cook was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired Regional Manager for the Federal Land Bank Association of Columbia.

A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Richland Creek Community Church.

Mr. Cook is survived by his son, David S. Cook Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Wake Forest; daughter-in-law, Alice Cook of Rolesville; three grandchildren, Christie Johnston and husband, Joseph, Aubrie Cook, Wanda Riddel and husband, Jeff; and four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Autumn, Miranda and Jackson.

Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; a son, Richard, and by a grandson, David S. Cook III.

Ralph Keith

Rolesville

Ralph Keith, 77, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015, at the William M. Dunlap Center for Caring. He was born in Franklin County, the son of the late Ashby Keith and Myrtle Perry Keith. Mr. Keith retired from S&W Chevrolet as an Auto Mechanic. After retirement Ralph continued his love for cars by always piddling on them for neighbors. He also enjoyed spending time is his garden, and being with his family, friends, and pets.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning, January 14, 2015, at Rolesville Baptist Church. Burial was in the Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Keith is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Chalk Keith; sons, Jeff Keith of Raleigh, Brian Keith of Charlotte and Chad Keith of Wilmington; brother, Jimmy Keith and wife, Diane, of Youngsville; sister, Barbara Young and husband, Wright, of Durham; nieces and nephews, Barrett Keith, Cameron Keith, Blair Matthews, Karen Cates and Ashley Young; special brothers-in-law, Harvey Chalk of Knightdale, Bobby Chalk of Zebulon and their families; and special sister-in-law, Elsie Narron of Knightdale and her family.

Peggie Journigan Bobbitt

Peggie Journigan Bobbitt, 74, died Friday, January 9, 2015, at her home. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Genie and Alice Journigan, and was a member of Forestville Baptist Church. She was a community mother and grandmother to many.

Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Nicholas Muteti officiating. Burial was in Forestville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Peggie is survived by her children, Terry Bobbitt and Brett Bobbitt of Wake Forest, Wendy Bobbitt Faulkner and husband, David, of Youngsville; sisters, Alice Clements and husband, Billie, of Biloxi, Mississippi, Emma Cates and husband, Garland, of Durham, Bettie Garner of Wake Forest, Frances Smith and husband, Ralph, of Louisburg, Janice Gaddy and husband, Al, of Raleigh; brother, Gaylon Journigan of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Tabitha Faulkner, Stephen Snow, Elizabeth Faison, Casey Bobbitt, Lena Bobbitt and Gracie Faulkner; and great-grandchildren, Joseph Faulkner and Dante Rochelle.

Albert Coley Height

Wake Forest

Albert Coley Height, 74, died Friday, January 9, 2015, at his home. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Lucille Watkins Height and Albert Evan Height. Mr. Height was the owner of Height’s Construction for many years.

Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon, January 12, 2015, at Glen Royal Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Faile officiating. Entombment was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Height is survived by his best friend and loving partner of 34 years, Carolyn Ann Thomas; sisters, Patricia Kinton and husband, Billy, of Youngsville, Nancy Ball and husband, Bobby, of Louisburg, Joyce Height and husband, Tom, of Wake Forest, and Edna Mae Wilson and husband, Stan, of Youngsville; children, Albert Edward Height and wife, Donna, of Zebulon, Kay Alford of Louisburg, Kathy LaRue Height of Franklinton, and Baretta Tilley Height of Louisburg; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and step-children, Carolyn Maria Ray of Bunn and Jeffrey Scott Gregory of Franklinton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Height.

Memorial contributions may be made to Duke Home Care and Hospice or to Glen Royal Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Bobby Perry, James Warren, Joel Keith, James Holding, Ricky Wright, Buddy Willis, and Bob White.

Laila Wave Johnson

Raleigh

Laila Wave Johnson, 88, passed away Friday morning, January 9, 2015, at Crabtree Valley Health & Rehabilitation. She was born in Vienna, Maine, to the late Willie Wave and Anna Pellinen Wave.

Laila graduated from Farmington High School in Farmington, Maine, and then attended nursing school. Later, she completed an additional degree in the health field. She worked as a nurse at Duke University in Durham for many years before pursuing a graduate degree in archeology. She was an avid reader and traveler, and she trekked the globe on archeological digs, as well as to her ancestors’ native Finland to visit relatives. She particularly loved the cultures and artifacts of Greece and England. In addition, she collected and studied rock specimens and loved visiting geological formations and researching their history. When she was not traveling, she loved spending time with her family.

A memorial service was held at 6 o’clock Monday evening, January 12, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her children, Gary David Johnson and wife, Gail, of Selma, Leej I. Copperfield and husband, Royce, of Raleigh, Wendy Johnson Hadland of Tallahassee; grandchildren, Shannon, Brad, Lee, Kim, and Matthew; six great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Herbert Wave and wife, Jean, of East Winthrop, Maine; and nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lempi Wave Bliss.

William Francis ‘Bill’ Caverly

William Francis “Bill” Caverly, 84, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Franklin Manor. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia, the son of the late Walter H. Caverly and Coletta Kain Caverly. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and parishioner of Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, January 10, 2015, at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Wake Forest. A burial will be held at a later date at Springhill Cemetery, Huntington, West Virginia.

Mr. Caverly is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Hurst Caverly; daughters, Lynn Ellen Caverly of Greenville, Carol Caverly Cutchin and husband, Randy, of Wake Forest, Donna Caverly Harrell and husband, Samuel, of Imperial, Missouri, and Maryann Caverly Bell and husband, John, of Louisburg; grandchildren, Andrew William Jobes of Branchburg, New Jersey, Meaghan Mitchell and husband, Robert, of Franklinton, Brian Cutchin of Greensboro, William Cutchin of Wake Forest, Hannah Callahan and husband, Chuck, of Nashville, Tennessee, Christopher Turner of Greenville, Patrick Raine Caverly Horne of Greenville and Madison Bell of Louisburg; brother, Robert Caverly of Christiansburg, Virginia; sisters, Dorothy Warne of Huntington, West Virginia, and Anne West of Pasadena, Texas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alice Rene Caverly; and by a brother, Fr. John Walter “Jack” Caverly.

Colonel John J. Cook

Cary

Colonel John Jerome Cook, US Army (Ret), 82, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015. He was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, to the late Jerome Francis Cook and Agnes Blank Cook. Col. Cook served 32 years active duty with the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

 Upon his retirement, Col. Cook owned and operated a family business, Concrete Coring Company, for more than 15 years in Gainesville, Virginia.

A memorial service was held at 2 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, January 11, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church in Youngsville.

A formal military burial will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Col. Cook is survived by his wife of 54 years, Diana Reed Cook of Franklinton; children, Jeffrey Alan Cook of Franklinton, Shannon Cook Stewart and husband, Dave, of Rixeyville, Virginia, and Dina Cook Griffith and husband, Christopher, of Cary; grandchildren, Krista Canfield, April Bauder, Virginia “Ginny” Meng, Dillon Kremer, Emily Stewart and Kassandra Cook; great-grandchildren, Sofia, Tyler and Lyla; brothers, Gerald Cook and wife, Mary Ann, of Watertown, Wisconsin, James Cook and wife, Ruth, of El Paso, Texas, and Joseph Cook of Waukesha, Wisconsin; several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Joyce Harris Allen

Joyce Harris Allen, 92, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 8, 2015, at her son’s home surrounded by her family. She was born in Franklin County to the late Hal T. Harris and Dora Vaughan Harris. She retired as a payroll clerk from Sterling Cotton Mill and was a member of Franklinton United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was held at 2 o’clock Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Franklinton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Champion officiating.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her sons, Barry Allen of New York, Randy Allen and wife, Sharon, of Sacramento, California, and Scott Allen and wife, Myra, of Youngsville; grandchildren, Kristi Allen of Wilson, Brittany Allen and Niki Allen both of Sacramento. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.B. Allen Jr.

James E. Garvey

James E. Garvey, born April 19, 1929, passed away Sunday morning, January 4, 2015, in his home surrounded by loved ones.  He was born to Raymond Garvey and Dorothy Wise in St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded by his parents; sister, Joyce; brother, Daniel; and sadly by his son, Barry.

Jim was a Veteran of the United States Marines serving in the Korean War and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant.  After leaving the Marines, he continued his public service for the Department of State in the Foreign Service Division.  Jim enjoyed golfing, skiing, tennis, and workouts with his friends at the gym.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Susan Schmader; his sons, Mark and Gregory; daughter, Karen Dodd; step-sons, Curt, George and Scott Schmader; and step-daughters, Tammy Calhoun and Lori Smith; as well as 24 grandchildren.

His family appreciates all of the kindness and support given by the Transitions Lifecare team, neighbors and friends.
