 Bailey,Hazel

Hazel Bailey

Raleigh

Hazel Ernestine Bailey was born on September 18, 1922, the eighth child of Delilah (Dillie) Brogden Bailey and Herman T. Bailey Sr.  She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings and their spouses: Myrtle Bailey Parker (Brooks), Betty Bailey, Kenneth B. Bailey Sr. (Ruth), H.T. Bailey Jr. (Dot), Oliver D. Bailey (Eleanor “Shine”), Janie Bailey, Lacey Harris (Ed), Mary Joyce “Polly” Grice (Ed), Sylvester F. Bailey, and Buckner B. Bailey (Pat); nephew, K.B. Bailey Jr., and great-nephew, Jonathan Bailey Plott.

Hazel is survived by one sister-in-law, Lib Bailey (Sylvester) and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews – all of whom loved and adored her.  Her nieces and nephew, Floyd Bailey, Betty Parker Mashburn, and Lacye Harris Owen, grew up in the same household with Hazel – knowing her as aunt, sister, and friend. Throughout her life, Hazel’s closest friends became family – not only to Hazel, but were embraced as “Baileys” by the entire family.

Lee Grice, Joyce Anne Grice, and Larry Grice were niece and nephews who shared their home with Hazel.  The Bailey family would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Joyce Anne Grice for putting her life and career on hold to ensure that all of Hazel’s needs were met the last few years of her life.

Hazel was 100 percent Bailey from the day she was born – tall, lean, kind, loyal, brilliant, with a quick wit and uncanny sense of humor. The Baileys were infamous for their storytelling and Hazel was no exception. The often retold Bailey stories were known as Bailey “Yarns”; and Hazel likened a good Bailey Yarn to a stew highly seasoned with herbs. You know there’s meat (truth) somewhere in the story, but you’d be hard pressed to find it.

In her youth, Hazel was very athletic.  During World War II, Hazel was a member of a Ball Team that provided her with the opportunity to play in the playoffs at Wrigley Field. Her mother would not permit Hazel to make the trip alone – so, she was accompanied by her brother Sylvester. He reminisced of his excitement of the trip – even during the last days of his life. Hazel loved to travel and was also an accomplished horsewoman. Many of her nieces and nephews have fond memories of accompanying Hazel to horseshows.

Hazel was a life-long resident of the Bay Leaf community where she was an active member of Bay Leaf Baptist Church and was involved in many community service activities. She served as treasurer of the Bay Leaf Fire Department for many years. Hazel was honored to receive the Bay Leaf Award recognizing her many contributions to the community.

Professionally, Hazel was the office manager at the Wilkerson OB-GYN Clinic in Raleigh NC for 52 years.  During that time, Hazel shared the lives of thousands of expectant and new mothers, and developed lifetime friendships with the doctors and medical staff.

A celebration of Hazel’s life was held at Bay Leaf Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon, December 28, 2014 at 3 o’clock. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated, but in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the following in Hazel’s honor: Bay Leaf Baptist Church, Bay Leaf Fire Department or Transitions LifeCare.

 Russell,Ashanie

Ashanie Shemar Russell

Wake Forest

Ashanie Shemar Russell, 19, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on February 20, 1995. Ashanie graduated in 2013 from Wake Forest-Rolesville High School and was a sophomore at East Carolina University.

Who was Ashanie Russell? Besides being a son, brother, cousin, nephew etc., Ashanie was a young man committed to living his life to bring glory to his GOD and Savior Jesus Christ. He loved God and he loved people. When Jesus was asked, what the greatest commandment was, He replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’. (Matthew 22:37-39) Ashanie aspired to live out these commandments. To Ashanie, everyone was his neighbor. Here are a few quotes from Ashanie as found on his Twitter account. “It’s just amazing to know that one day we will be risen just as Jesus Christ has been risen. I can’t even fathom how great that day will be” and “He died on the cross for our sins. The least we can do is follow Him whole heartedly, and live our lives for Him” as well as “Gotta get my priorities in check. God first and then everything else will fall into place”.

Ashanie took time to check up on his friends. He was deliberate in his relationships. He was always checking up on them and seeing how they were doing, giving them encouragement when it was needed.

Ashanie became a part of what ever family he was with. He was that kind of young man. He was known for and will always be remembered for his great smile and his hugs as well as his bow ties.

Here is what one of his good friends had to say: “Ashanie was a friend to all and everything to a few. The time that we were able to be with him is worth the pain we feel now. Ashanie touched the lives and hearts of everyone he met never neglecting to put a smile on someone’s face. Ashanie strived to bring glory to his savior in all aspects of life”. (David Ellis)

Ashanie tweeted this back in September when one of his friends passed away and we are sure he would want it said here. “RIP to those who did not make it to see another day. Blessed are the ones who are able to go home and tell their loved ones I LOVE YOU”.

Ashanie, you are loved and will be missed. Till the day we meet again.

A celebration of Ashanie’s life was held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, January 4, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church. Burial was in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Ashanie is survived by his mother, Jackie Grant of Wake Forest; father, Nigel Russell and wife, Ionie, of Hampton, Georgia; siblings, LaToya Russell of New York, Aaleyah Russell and Michael Gregory, both of Wake Forest, Nigel A. Russell Jr. of Florida and Zanthe Russell of New York; grandparents, Inez Jumman of Florida, Evelyn Davis Lee of New York and Sylvester Grant of New York; great-grandmother, Eva Box of New York; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Early Russell.

Memorial contributions may be made to a fund that has been created in an effort to help Ashanie’s family with medical and funeral expenses. Please visit http://www.gofundme.com/jc4x3k to donate.
