Vandals damage greenway benches, sign

The Wake Forest Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying the person or persons responsible for damaging eight benches and an information board along Smith Creek Greenway in the vicinity of Heritage High School, 1150 Forestville Road. Sometime late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning, vandals used saws to cut the slats in the composite wood benches in an unsuccessful attempt to remove the planks from the metal frames. The culprits also used rocks to destroy a trail information board. Park maintenance crews have removed the information board and benches which will cost several thousand dollars to repair and reinstall. “We provide benches along our greenways so users can rest, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature,” said Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Director Ruben Wall. “It’s terribly disappointing that someone would maliciously destroy these amenities at the expense of the Town and the people who use these

Do you have the right ID to be able to vote this fall?

Beginning with this fall’s town election in November, North Carolina’s residents have to show some approved form of identification to cast a ballot. It is not enough to be registered to vote; you have an additional bar to voting – the requirement that you show an acceptable form of identification with your picture. The problem of getting a current identification card with your photograph may prove difficult for older people, especially those who do not drive or have a car. There are a few ways older people can use ID cards they had when they were younger or still have. If you do not have a current identification card with your photograph but still have such a card from previous employment or other agency and are over 65, you can use that card as your ID if it had not yet expired when you turned 65. Also, there are three

Rogers Road rezoning request withdrawn

On Tuesday night, August 15, 2023, Mayor Vivian Jones was absent from her usual chair because she was representing the town at a conference. It was expected that a public hearing about the requested rezoning of 27 acres on Rogers Road for 148 townhouses would bring out a sizable number of town residents to object. And then there could be a lengthy discussion by the town commissioners. But before the meeting and in time for the agenda to be amended and possible speakers to learn of it, M & M Co., LLC, the owners, withdrew the request. That led to a 15-minute meeting during which Mayor pro tem Jim Dyer led the other commissioners in a prayer, Commissioner Chad Sary read a proclamation about the dangers elderly people experience if they fall, Jennie Griggs, the director of the Northern Wake and Wendell senior centers, responded but did not speak into
