Many boards have open seats

Through the decades Wake Forest residents have helped the town make decisions about programs and plans as well as helping themselves learn more about how town government works by volunteering to serve on a town board.

The boards were established to give residents input into what happens in the community and advise the Board of Commissioners (BOC) on matters that affect citizens and their town government.

Applications are being accepted through Friday, Oct. 6, for appointments to the following boards and commissions:

  • Historic Preservation Commission (HPC)
  • Human Relations Council (HRC)
  • Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Advisory Board
  • Planning Board
  • Public Art Commission (PAC)
  • Technology Advisory Board (TAB)
  • Urban Forestry Board (UFB)

Area high school students (grades 11-12) are also invited to apply to serve as representatives on every board, except the Planning Board.

The online advisory board application is available on the Town website at http://bit.ly/TOWFAdvBoardApplication. Anyone without access to a computer is invited to complete the application by using a computer kiosk in the lobby of Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St. Hard copies are available upon request by contacting Deputy Town Clerk at 919-435-9436 or edowtin@wakeforestnc.gov.

Anyone interested in applying for an advisory board should note the following:

  • Residents may apply for one advisory board only.
  • Current advisory board members are not required to re-apply but instead should notify Ella Dowtin at 919-435-9436 or edowtin@wakeforestnc.gov.
  • The PRCR Advisory Board has two areas of interest: 1) Parks and Recreation; 2) Cultural Arts.
  • This year, only residents who reside in the Town are needed to fill seats on the Planning Board.
  • Candidates for the Planning Board will be introduced to the BOC during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Appointments to these boards will also be announced during this meeting.
  • All candidates for the HPC must reside within the jurisdiction of Wake Forest. Individuals who reside in the Historic District and professionals with historic preservation expertise are especially encouraged to apply.
  • All candidates will be expected to attend the October meeting of the advisory board to which they applied to introduce themselves to the current members and explain why they wish to serve. Following these interviews, each advisory board will review its slate of candidates before submitting its recommendations to the BOC. The BOC will announce the advisory board appointments during its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19. New terms will commence in January 2024.
  • Selected applicants for all boards, will volunteer for three-year terms, unless unexpired terms are being filled and advise the board on a variety of topics relating to the Wake Forest community.
