Koinonia celebrates 25 years of caring

The Koinonia Foundation will mark 25 years of meeting basic human needs in the greater Wake Forest area with its Koinonia Cares Charity Auction held at The Forks Cafeteria on February 7 starting at 5:30 pm.

This year’s theme, “Caring for the Hearts of Our Community for 25 years,” reflects both the foundation’s milestone anniversary and the auction’s proximity to Valentine’s Day, a holiday about love and caring, according to Bob Hill, president of Koinonia.

“The Koinonia Foundation reflects the caring nature and spirit of our community, and our February auction has become a wonderful Valentine’s tradition in the greater Wake Forest area,” said Hill. “The support of businesses, organizations and individuals enable Koinonia to provide assistance for our neighbors in need who have nowhere else to turn.”

Established back in 1990, the Koinonia Foundation has evolved into a non-denominational organization that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Foundation has given nearly 95 percent back to the community in both charitable organization grants and individual grants for those in need. The sole fundraiser of the year is the Koinonia Cares Charity Auction, which relies on donated items and sponsorships to be a success year after year.

Sunflower Studio & Gallery resident artist and manager, Gayle Blackerby, is one of the many people who have donated to the auction in the past. She enlists other artists to donate because she “totally gets what Koinonia is trying to do.”

“All the artists at the Sunflower Studio feel the love and generosity of the Koinonia spirit,” said Blackerby. “We know that by donating our work to be auctioned, we can help them help others.  We enjoy seeing what can be accomplished each year through our donations.”

One organization that is hoping to benefit from this year’s auction is the Rolesville High School Pantry. The RHS Pantry will be included in the auction’s 2015 Ministry Focus. Principal Ericka Lucas is happy to bring awareness of high school hunger to the community on auction night.

“Many times we forget that high school students come from middle schools that have programs which provide them with food and other necessities. Just because they are now in high school, that does not mean their needs have been met. We must continue to look at the total child and provide them with the basics to be successful. It is my goal to make sure that our kids do not have to worry about where they will get their next meal,” said Lucas.

The Foundation is now accepting donated items and auction sponsorships. For more information about the auction and The Koinonia Foundation, please contact Lynnette Beadle at 919-801-7726, email auction@koinoniawf.org or visit www.koinoniawf.org .

  1. Carol,

    Thanks for your continued support!

One of our goals this year is to raise the level of awareness of the Koinonia Foundation in the greater Wake Forest area. As you know, over the years, the Foundation has been a rather quiet, low key but very effective organization.

    ‘Hope you are doing well.

    Thanks again,

    Bob Hill
