Hate the traffic? Call your state senator or representative

Last week’s Gazette was filled the pleas from Wake Forest residents to deny three housing projects because the traffic on the adjacent roads was already overwhelming. I write specifically about Burlington Mills Road, Forestville Road, Ligon Mill Road and Jenkins Road.
These roads and streets in and around Wake Forest are still two lanes when their current and projected traffic loads show they should be at four lanes.
The Wake Forest Town Board voted to approve said projects without mentioning that it has no control over those roads. They are owned and maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which is funded by the North Carolina General Assembly.
Said General Assembly is still in session and has not set its budget for the next two years. Although the General Assembly as a whole has not been responsive to many pleas, the individual senator or representative does want to retain his or her seat in the next election and should therefore be more inclined to be responsive to constituent complaints.
Be forewarned that an informal group is currently trying to get more state or federal funds to enable DOT to construct all four segments of the Capital Boulevard freeway. But what use is a freeway if you are stuck in traffic on an inadequate road trying to reach the freeway?
You can reach our N.C. Senator Mary Wills Bode at the legislature here: 919-733-5850, MaryWills.Bode@ncleg.gov. You can reach our N.C. House member Terence Everitt at the legislature here: 919-715-3210, Terence.Everitt@ncleg.gov.
Be polite and do not yell. Explain that DOT has to find funds to widen and improve these essential roads. Good luck.

  1. I read in your article that “The Wake Forest Town Board voted to approve said projects without mentioning that it has no control over those roads.” this is a true statement from a Board perspective.
However, what they do control is the amount of traffic that will be generated from all of the construction projects they have approved. It is time to STOP THE MADNESS of generating increasing construction traffic and increased commuter traffic.
To the Board of Commissioners. LEARN TO SAY NO!!!

  2. Dot needs to do the capitol blvd free way project it should have been do years ago
that will make the trafic on some roads worse because some will be denied acess to capitol blvd. I hope DOT knows what they are doing and it fixes the problem. I just hope I live to see the capitol blvd project completed.

    1. I hope you live to see it and so do I. I think we’re about the same age. Did you see that Shirley Wooten died? She was 101!

  3. F this. Get this town council to STOP APPROVING NEW DEVELOPMENT! Good LORD. When is enough enough?
