Brief Bits

Back at the end of May the online newspaper WakeForestToday said Wegmans was considering building one of its stores on the triangle of land just to the north of where Stadium Drive meets Capital Boulevard. The land is owned by Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, part of the tracts to the west of town once owned by Wake Forest College and part of the sale in the 1950s.

From other indications, a Wegmans grocery store in Wake Forest is still a possibility. In January of this year the grocery chain announced it intended to build its first North Carolina store in Cary and planned to build 13 more stores in coming years without mentioning the locations.

Wegmans has stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts and boasts a “European open-air market feel” with a pharmacy, ready-made meals, a pizza shop, coffee shop and more. It is consistently rated one of the best or best grocery chains.

When the Wake Forest Planning Department’s Technical Review Committee met on May 12 they reviewed a plan for 12 units of townhouses on South Franklin Street between East Holding Avenue and Elm Avenue. The 1.89-acre lot on the east side of the street just south of the Creekside apartments is owned by WW Properties & Rentals LLC, which purchased it in 2013. The land has along list of former owners dating back to the Holding family which operated a dairy farm on the south side of town.

The committee also examined the plan for a commercial building on 1.32 acres at 2815 Rogers Road.
