Downtown connector work begins July 11

Construction of the Smith Creek, Sanford Creek and Dunn Creek Greenways Downtown Connector will begin Monday, July 11, to connect the major activity centers in Wake Forest.

A continuous pedestrian facility will be built consisting of approximately 3.8 miles of greenway trail – including boardwalk and bridges – and 0.8 mile of sidewalk, along with a multi-use path in the vicinity of Heritage Elementary, Heritage Middle, and Heritage High Schools.

The different portions are:

— A 10-foot wide, paved greenway will be constructed from the existing southern end of the Smith Creek Greenway at the Smith Creek Soccer Center, south along Smith Creek to the intersection with Sanford Creek. From there the greenway will follow Sanford Creek along the Heritage High School property and end at the existing western edge of the Sanford Creek Greenway in the Heritage South neighborhood.

— A 10-foot wide paved greenway will also be built from the existing northern end of the Dunn Creek Greenway at the NC 98 Bypass/Dr. Calvin Jones Highway pedestrian culvert, north to Town of Wake Forest property.  The project will include trail spurs to the west connecting to Ledgerock Road and Cardinal Crest Lane. It will also address drainage issues within the existing pedestrian culvert and include the installation of lighting.

— Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly connections to adjoining schools and neighborhoods will also be constructed, thereby promoting environmentally-friendly transportation routes to local schools, parks, shopping centers, and homes.

The contractor for the work is the Fred Smith Company, and work is expected to be completed late in 2017.

Area residents are advised that during construction portions of adjoining sidewalks and greenways may be temporarily closed for the safety of pedestrians and work crews.
