Brief Bits

Where are the traffic signals? People keep asking, particularly about the one planned where Franklin Street meets the N.C. 98 Bypass (Dr. Calvin Jones Highway). The editor will not make a left turn there until the signal is installed. The sight distance to the right is too short.

This week Wake Forest Town Engineer Eric Keravuori said there is still no update on when that signal and the one at the Marshall Farm Road/Rogers Road intersection will be installed. “Last I heard was that Marshall Farm and South Franklin were both designed, approved, funded and waiting on the contractor to complete others that are packaged in a big contract.” So it will be a 2016 project.

Also, Keravuori said there is no update on the construction for Sam’s Club. “They are currently grading the outside lanes (of Capital Boulevard). The asphalt plants can’t produce surface asphalt between Dec. 15 and March 15, so at a minimum it will be after the March date to finish.”

On Monday, Dec. 14, Wake Forest area veterans went to the Fort Bragg Wounded Warrior Battalion’s Christmas Party and gave all the soldiers undergoing treatment $25 gift cards made possible by fundraising by American Legion Post 187 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8466. The battalion soldiers thanked the veterans for their concern and sent their thanks to those who worked on their behalf.

Ever wonder why one synonym for a prison is “the clink?” It is because there actually was a Clink Prison on the south side of the Thames from 1151 to 1780 that was part of the Bishop of Winchester’s residence, Winchester Palace. It was close by two theaters, the Rose and the Globe, and two other entertainment establishments, the bull-baiting arena and the bear-baiting arena.
