Brief Bits

Last week The Wake Forest Gazette told you that Ross Dress for Less, Michael’s and TJ Maxx would be occupying the new stores going up in Wake Forest Crossing shopping center.

This week we are able to tell you, thanks to a tip from a reader, that Petco and Kirkland’s, a home décor chain, will occupy the buildings called Store A and Store B in last week’s article. It is not clear which business will occupy which building.

There has been a change in the plans for the 108-unit Franklin Street Apartment project the town commissioners approved with some quibbles back in February. See the article in the Feb. 19, 2014 issue.

On Oct. 16, the Technical Review Committee reviewed a new plan for the site on the east side of Franklin Street very near the N.C. 98 bypass. Cline Design now wants townhouses on the 6.63 acres which already has RMX zoning (mixed residential).

During that same meeting, the committee reviewed a site construction plan for Redd Chiropractic to have an office in the small yellow house at 1269 South Main Street. The existing zoning is neighborhood business and the applicant was the Mitchell Design Group.

The third item was a site construction application for an office on 3acresatthe intersection of Brimfield Springs Lane and Ligon Mill Road. The existing zoning is conditional neighborhood business, and the applicant is Stewart Engineering.

You may wonder what happened to Ruben Wall’s plan for spraygrounds as an adjunct to the Holding Park Pool and alternative water fun at town parks. Wall is the director of the town’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. The idea is alive, just waiting for funding.

The town has submitted a request to Wake County’s Housing and Community Revitalization office for money to install a sprayground at the Alston-Massenburg Center on North Taylor Street.

“If all goes well we will get the grant for the sprayground at Alston-Massenburg. Thanks to Chip Russell, Planning Director, for having the foresight to submit this on our behalf. We hope to have some water features at the new Joyner Park Center playground in the future. We hope to continue to work with the Kiwanis Club to raise funds,” Wall wrote in an email this week.

On Oct. 9 the town’s Design Review Board held a public hearing and then approved the request by the Wake Forest Fire Department for a major architectural design review of its Station #4 on Jenkins Road. The approved design has a lower profile than the drawings shown during earlier public hearings.

Work is underway at the site.

Back in late July, we learned the electricity bills for Wake Forest Power customers could be lowered because of an agreement between Duke Energy Progress and the power agency representing Wake Forest and 31 other municipalities in the state.

The agreement has to be approved by state and federal regulators, and it could be the middle of 2015 or later before we know how the agreement, if approved at all levels, will affect Wake Forest residents.

But it is also good to check on progress, so this week the Gazette asked Town Manager Mark Williams the status of the agreement.

“No change. Duke has submitted their request to FERC. Now it’s a waiting game,” was his answer.

If you want to see the article about that agreement, search for “Duke Energy Progress” on this site or scroll down to the July 30 article.

  1. I find it hard to believe that the Design Review Board has so much authority. After having been approved by the Towns Planning Dept. The Planning Board and Town Board a project must still be approved by another group. If I understand correctly they can accept or require the builder to make changes to the project. In my opinion that is giving 5 people lots of authority. I can understand why builders get frustrated trying to build in WF. I would think after being OK’d by the first 3 boards that would be enough. I do know we had to change the slope on some of roof lines because of the Design . Review Board because of 1 person. The reason the slopes of the roof were there per request of the Planning Board and the neighbors in Station 4 vicinity.

  2. Keep up the good work. The Gazette is both enlightening and entertaining. Thank you for your work..
