A letter: Thank you

To the editor:

On behalf of all disabled veterans the Wake Forest Memorial Post 8466 Veterans of Foreign Wars wishes to thank the citizens of the greater Wake Forest area for the tremendous show of support provided during the recent “Buddy Poppy” drive conducted during the month of May 2016.

Every year Post 8466 and VFW posts throughout the nation asks for funds to help disabled veterans. This year’s fundraiser was the very best in recent years. The funds raised during this important event are used to provide those living in veteran homes and hospitals with sundry items not provided by the VA. In addition, the funds help the veteran by purchasing games, puzzles, cards, and personal items necessary for their day to day comfort.

As many of you already know wounded service members participating in combat in remote areas of the world, due to modern medicine and evacuation procedures, receive the very best attention saving lives but requiring extensive periods of rehabilitation and recovery. Many disabled veterans are left with lasting injuries requiring them to be hospitalized for long periods. It is the later veterans that require our devotion and assistance for whatever period of rehabilitation.

One hundred percent of the funds received during our “Buddy Poppy” drive are devoted to the men and women who suffer the pains of long rehabilitation and recovery. Often overlooked are the family members of our disabled veterans who suffer every day attending the service members. Their devotion and persistence to the needs of the disabled veteran often go unnoticed. Please offer your prayers and financial support for those champions who daily face challenges we can only read about as they go about the activities required to sustain the disabled veteran.

Disabled veterans don’t ask for much in the way of outreach. The VFW motto “No one Does More for Our Veterans” compels every member to see to it that no veteran is unattended or in need. The generosity expressed by your participation in our Poppy drive will go a long way toward achieving our goal expressed in that motto. Thank You!

Rich Heroux

A Disabled Veteran
