Cops and dementia topic of free meeting

It happens often enough that Wake Forest business owners do want to know how the Wake Forest Police Department is trained to interact with the elderly, especially those struggling with dementia. An elderly man comes into the store and appears confused and disoriented. After you take him to a quiet place and dial 911, what happens next? Or a customer reports that her elderly father with dementia has wandered away from your waiting room. How does the police department respond? Or a patient tells the receptionist that her daughter is poisoning her and the two family members begin loud arguing and fighting in your waiting room. What can be done? The needs are all across Wake County but are more severe in Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Garner. The Center for Volunteer Caregiving is in hopes volunteers from these areas will step forward to help fill the need, and the center is sponsoring a volunteer orientation Thursday, Aug. 10, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Northern Wake Senior Center on East Holding Avenue. Flexible volunteer opportunities are available. The center gives priority to those seniors and disabled adults who have the greatest economic and social need or are at risk of institutional placement.

Senior Center this week

Soon it will be the Senior Center Without Walls when the center closes for a major expansion, almost doubling the current space. While it is underway, Miranda Strider-Allen and the staff are planning how to keep operating as many programs and services as possible. “We are planning on moving programs and services throughout Wake Forest,” Strider-Allen said recently. We are partnering with the Town of Wake Forest to use its Renaissance Center, Community House, Flaherty Community Center as well as space at the county’s Northern Regional Center. Three assisted living centers, Brookdale, Carillon and The Lodge, as well as the American Legion building, are housing programs, just to name a few sites. “Our goal is to start programs outside the center by September or sooner. We will also be moving the staff and office by then.” Whether you are new or an old hand at the senior center, you should
