Betty Maynard

Wake Forest

Mrs. Betty Maynard of 896 Youngsville Boulevard, Wake Forest, went to see her Lord on July 18, 2017. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Frazier Mabe and Mary Elizabeth Archer, and two brothers, Archer Mabe and Donald Mabe .

She leaves behind two daughters, Donna Lynam and her husband, Roy Lynam, and Deborah Scholz ; four grandchildren, Angie, Christa, Leah and Nicholas; five great- grandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild.

Betty was a librarian at Southeastern Baptist Theological  Wake Seminary. She held an undergraduate degree from Averette University and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She retired as the media director at the Danville, Virginia, city schools and later published three books of her family genealogies.

She was a member of Wake Union Baptist Church, the DAR and the Wake Forest Historical Association.

Family will receive loved ones at 10 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Service, followed by her memorial service at 11a.m. Her internment will be at Mt. View Cemetery in Danville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wake Union Baptist Church Land Fund, Kindred Hospice of Oxford or The Wake Forest Historical Museum.

Tammy Benson Jett

Durham

Tammy Benson Jett, 45, died Saturday, July 15, 2017. She was born August 17, 1971 to Raymond and Lildred Haislip Benson. Tammy loved frogs and peach tulips.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Interment will be in Wake Forest Cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Hickey of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Sarah Jett of Youngsville; a son, Eric Jett of Youngsville; her parents, Lil Benson of Whitestone and Butch Benson of Gloucester, Virginia; a sister, Kimberly Benson of Weems, Virginia; two brothers, Christopher Benson of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and Matthew Benson of Matthews, Virginia; a granddaughter, Olivia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Speas Smith

Raleigh

Dorothy Speas Smith, 88, died on Monday July 17, 2017. She was born in Forsyth County, the daughter of the late Ethel Hicks Speas and Shober Ray Speas Sr. Mrs Smith was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Emma and Olivia Smith; and a brother; Shober Speas Jr. She was a 1947 graduate of Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem.

A graveside service will be held at 10 o’clock Friday morning July 21, 2017, at Raleigh Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 11 o’clock at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church with a reception immediately following the service.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jimmie Smith; a daughter, Susan Smith; a son, Charles Smith and wife, Suzanne; and a granddaughter, Lydia Smith, all of Raleigh.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church Granny’s Purse Fund, 4900 Kaplan Drive,  Raleigh NC 27606.

Barry Lynn Denson

Franklinton

Barry Lynn Denson, 55, of 80 Greenfield Drive, passed away of esophageal cancer on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Rawlings Leon Denson and Carolyn Jane Dowdy Denson. Mr. Denson was a procurement manager with CBRE.

Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, July 16, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. David Averette officiating.

Mr. Denson is survived by his wife, Donna L. Denson; daughter, Michelle Bolt and husband, Stephen Bolt, of Gastonia; two granddaughters, Elaine and Lillian; brother, R.L. and wife, Gwen, of Franklinton; uncle and aunt, Butch and Evelyn North of Lynchburg; and several cousins.

Flowers will be accepted as well as donations to Duke Cancer Institute Fund.

Daries ‘Bub’ Biggerstaff Jr.

Youngsville

Daries “Bub” Biggerstaff Jr., 84, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Transitions Life Care Hospice in Raleigh. He was born in Lincoln County, the son of the late Gladys Boggs Biggerstaff and Daries Olof Biggerstaff Sr.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, July 15, 2017, in the Harris Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Haley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Biggerstaff is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Best Biggerstaff; his children, Daries Neal Biggerstaff of Raleigh, Kathy Biggerstaff  Little ( Ken) of Creedmoor and David Worth Biggerstaff (Kristi) of Youngsville; grandchildren, Daries Neal Biggerstaff Jr., Torin Biggerstaff, Angela Limthong  (Borphan), Lori Little McCracken (Daniel), Krista Little Kirschbaum (Adam), Sherrill Little Carson (Steve), Adam Jordan Biggerstaff and Brent David Biggerstaff; great-grandchildren, Emmalise McCracken, Pascaline Grace McCracken, Ethan Jai Limthong, Kenton Michael Kirschbaum, Stella Ann Carson and Shelby Louise Carson; and a sister, Brownie Trainham.

Edith C. Freeman

Raleigh

Edith Cooley Freeman, 86, of Raleigh died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, surrounded by her beloved family. Edith and her husband were lifelong members of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Raleigh. She was passionate about her grandchildren and her church. Edith worked at Carolina Power & Light and also the Security Commission for many years. She enjoyed working in her garden and flowers.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Deward Joe Freeman; a sister, Peggy Ann Watkins; and a nephew, Steve Watkins.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Pastor Shannon Scott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Jo Ann and husband, Ricky Mason, and Debra Murray, all of Raleigh; grandchildren, Christi and Mark Mattson, Juli and David Harp, Matthew and Stephanie Murray, Joseph Carr Murray Sr., and Christy Murray, Suzanne and Mark Morais and Connie and Jeremy Garkalns; great-grandchildren, Taylor Tant, Leeanne Harp, Josie Murray, Amanda Murray, Jodie Murray, Mason Morais, Joseph Carr Murray Jr., Matthew Murray, Connor Morais, David Harp Jr., Chandler Garkalns, Sadie Garkalns and Bryce Garkalns; and a nephew, Mike and his wife, Mona Watkins.

Ms. Freeman’s family would like to offer their sincere thanks for the many wonderful caregivers and hospice workers who cared for Ms. Freeman and helped to make her final days more comfortable.
