61 new homes permitted in July

In July the Wake Forest Inspections Department issued 61 permits for new homes – 49 single-family houses and 12 townhouses – and a permit for a new commercial building on Rogers Road. Mark Dixon of Qualified Builders Inc. of Raleigh will construct the retail building at 2815 Rogers Road, the 1.3-acre lot next to the Rite-Aid pharmacy under construction. The fees totaled $35,930.21 and the building is estimated to add $455,845 in value to the town tax base. Lat Purser & Associates of Charlotte bought the property and an adjoining one in January this year. Inspectors also approved the fit-ups for two businesses – Bada Bean Coffee & Things at 938 Gateway Commons Circle and a fabric retail store at 992 Durham Road – as well as two separate retail space suites, one at 1000 Forestville Road and the other at 1040 Forestville Road. Dementia awareness series continues Aug. 18

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will host the second session in the Wake Forest Dementia Awareness Education Series on Thursday, Aug. 18. The meeting will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Renaissance Centre at 405 Brooks Street. Entitled “Dementia Conversations,” the Aug. 18 workshop will offer tips on how to have honest and caring conversations with family members about deciding when to stop driving, going to the doctor and making legal and financial decisions. “Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors” will round out the series on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Behavior is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. Have coffee with some cops

The Wake Forest Police Department will host Coffee with a Cop at the Wake Forest Coffee Company, 156 South White Street, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 to 10 a.m. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for police officers and community members to come together in an informal, neutral setting to discuss community issues and build relationships – one cup of coffee at a time. The majority of contact law enforcement officers have with the public tends to occur during emergencies or emotional situations, which are often not the best times to build relationships. “Coffee with a Cop” aims to breaks down barriers and allow for relaxed, one-on-one interaction. Challenge: Raise $5,000 in 30 days

The Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress has issued a challenge to chamber members and area residents to raise $5,000 in 30 days to support the Youth Leadership Wake Forest program and its adult counterpart, Leadership Wake Forest. Your donation will go towards educational programming for 30 high school students participating in Youth Leadership, as well as support the philanthropic class project that the adult Leadership Wake Forest class undertakes. Where’s the farmers market?

On Saturday, Aug. 13, the Wake Forest Farmers Market will not be in its usual space in front of the Renaissance Centre because the first Wake Forest Home & Garden Show will take place in the center and the parking lot is needed for people attending that. But the market will not go far. All the tents and good things to eat will be across Elm Avenue in the small town parking lot behind town hall and as always in the summer it will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. The part of Taylor Street between town hall and Elm Avenue will be closed, but there will be parking on Elm and other nearby streets. Senior Center this week

There is only one more day, Thursday, Aug. 11, to donate before the annual yard sale on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 12 and 13. Gary Charles Rooth Raleigh On August 5, 2016, Gary Charles Rooth passed away after a strongly willed fight against pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. Gary was able to use his passion for helping people with their finances every day at Janney Montgomery Scott. He entered heaven leaving a legacy of seven children, two grandchildren, many friends, extended family, and his loving wife, Nancy. Gary has been taken to greet many friends and family members in heaven, but most importantly his Savior, Jesus Christ, has welcomed him home. A celebration and remembrance of Gary’s life was held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, August 9, 2016, at Bay Leaf Baptist Church.
