Home/Garden show set for Aug. 13-14

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts, 405 S. Brooks St., will host the inaugural Wake Forest Home & Garden Show on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13-14. The show is scheduled on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. Sponsored by Mitchell Heating & Cooling and B93.9 New Country, the event will showcase the latest in home improvement products, services, and features. A variety of exhibits will be offered both inside and outside the Renaissance Centre featuring over 40 local experts. “For anyone planning a home improvement or yard enhancement project, our home and garden show will offer a convenient look at what’s available in our area,” said Renaissance Centre Manager Cathy Gouge. Popularity means more volunteers needed

As the popularity of Friday Night on White continues to grow, so too does the need for volunteers. Due to the incredible success of the first four Friday Night on White concerts, the Town of Wake Forest is seeking additional volunteers for the remaining performances. Presented by White Street Brewing Co., the Friday Night on White outdoor music series takes place along South White Street in downtown Wake Forest from 6 to 9 p.m. on the second Friday night of each month from April through September. Attendance at the concerts has steadily increased each month. Well over 4,000 area residents turned out to see the Magic Pipers Band on April 8, followed by an estimated 9,000 on May 13 for Brickhouse, and over 10,000 on June 10 for The Will McBride Group. Summer’s good foods at the market

Cantaloupe, watermelon, peaches and peach ice cream, blueberries, tomatoes, sweet corn – all the special food treats of summer are for sale every Saturday morning at the Wake Forest Farmers Market in the Renaissance Plaza on Brooks Street. Enjoy a concert in the park Aug. 7

Spend an evening in Wake Forest with family and friends and enjoy some foot-tapping, finger-snapping good times during two upcoming concerts at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Christiane & The Strays will perform at the first Concert in the Park on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 5-7 p.m., while the second performance will feature Dark Water Rising on Sunday, Sept. 4. Senior Center this week

The annual Willie Ray’s Beach Party Cookout will be held tomorrow, Thursday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to noon with entertainment and great food as well as pulling the winner of the raffle for the handmade quilt Donna Pernell made and donated. Tickets may still be on sale at $1 each or six for $5. Space is limited for the beach party so sign up at the front desk. The Ladies of Valor will present a veteran’s quilt and there will be a veteran’s pinning and certificate ceremony. Virginia ‘Ginny’ Jackson Raleigh Ginny Jackson was born on April 14, 1932, near Franklin, West Virginia, to Guy Lee and Elsie Messick. She grew up in Ellicott City, an historic town outside of Baltimore. After graduating from Catonsville High School, she worked as a bank teller at National Bank in Virginia and Maryland. She was brought up in the United Brethren Church, where her paternal grandfather was a minister, but she became a Baptist after meeting Tom. They were married in his home church in Baltimore on June 8, 1952, by her grandfather, Rev. L.C. Messick and by Tom’s pastor. Tom was a student at the University of Richmond, but he was also pastor of a country church outside Fredericksburg, Vitginia He continued his studies at Southeastern Seminary, and Ginny maintained their home and worked at the bank. When he was graduated from the seminary, she was awarded a well-deserved
