An inquiring mind

A reader sent in a long list of questions for the editor the other day, and this is a way to share the answers to that inquiring mind’s queries. — The rumor that Publix is looking for a second Wake Forest location is probably just that or wishful thinking. Assistant Planning Director Charlie Yokley said this week: “We haven’t talked to anyone about a second Publix location.” — A tentative opening date for Publix is probably two to three months down the road, out in May if not June. The site is a morass – dirt everywhere with the small retail flex space not yet built. The best indication of a somewhat firm date will be when Publix begins hiring the 100-plus local people to staff the store. They begin hiring about a month before the store opens. — An opening date for Sam’s is dependent on the contractor finishing

The Town of Wake Forest will host a Retail 101 Workshop on Thursday, March 31, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts on Brooks Street. The workshop will feature Michael J. Berne of MJB Consulting, who will unravel the secrets behind downtown retail. Considered to be one of the nation’s leading experts on downtown retail, Berne will explain in language that is clear, accessible and relatively jargon-free the logic and theory that underlies how different kinds of retailers think about site location; what they typically consider, value and seek; and what all of it might mean for the future of Downtown Wake Forest. Several opportunities for questions and dialogue will be integrated into the presentation, and the PowerPoint document will be provided as a takeaway. Anyone involved with retail in downtown or elsewhere is encouraged to attend, including elected officials, community groups, property

Opinion: The special session

Earlier this week the editor sent a short email to state Representative Chris Malone: “The apparent rush to overturn the Charlotte anti-discrimination ordinance is a very bad idea. Transgender people have been using bathrooms that fit their preference — and their appearance — for years without problems. Overturning the Charlotte ordinance would just be another way for the GA to interfere with local affairs – which Republicans are supposed to oppose.” This was Malone’s response: “Good point! So why did Charlotte collude with a convicted child molester to write the ordinance? If all is fine then nothing was needed right?  I’m getting calls from top Dems from around the state. They are afraid of big slap down by the GA after over reach by an “idiotic” city council. Dems are furious with them.  When I heard a  child molester was about to be a leader in opened up bathrooms I
