Board extends center’s loan

Tuesday night three of the Wake Forest commissioners voted to extend the timeline of the nearly $1-million loan to the Wireless Research Center of North Carolina to 10 years with a large balloon payment in 2026. Commissioners Brian Pate and Margaret Stinnett voted no. The board also heard that the controversial request to build seven townhouses on South Allen Road at the corner of Elm Avenue was withdrawn by developer Mark Iafrate on March 2, the day after the South Allen neighbors spoke firmly against the project and presented a petition signed by almost all the neighbors and others. A number of the neighbors were at Tuesday’s meeting because the request was part of the town board’s agenda. The loan question sparked a discussion after Commissioners Anne Reeve and Greg Harrington made and seconded a motion to approve the extension as proposed by Gerald Hayes and Larry Steffann, the center’s

Brief Bits

One item not on the town board’s agenda Tuesday night was a settlement with downtown property owner Bob Johnson, who claims he has deeds – or a deed – to the land under fairly new asphalt between the block of buildings housing his Cotton Company and the B&W Hardware. The town says it is an extension of East Owen Avenue and acted as the owner by paving and improving the small area during the South White Streetscape project. The matter was to go to court on Feb. 1, but then it was announced that the parties were reaching an agreement. Then first the matter was on the town board’s Feb. 16 agenda, but by meeting time it was off the agenda and listed as the topic for a closed session with two town attorneys. Town Manager Kip Padgett was asked about the status of the settlement and replied, “The town

Finally, a signal!

January = slow molasses = DOT signal construction = another accident at the Rogers Road/Marshall Farm Street intersection involving a school bus. It was sadly ironic that there was an accident involving a school bus and other vehicles at the Rogers Road/Marshall Farm Street on Thursday, March 10, the same day an official with the state Department of Transportation confirmed a traffic signal will be installed at that intersection by mid-April. Thankfully, there were no injuries from the accident. DOT Deputy Division Traffic Engineer John Sandor said the concrete foundations for the signal have been approved and will be poured in about two weeks. A week later, after the concrete has cured, crews will begin installing the poles and wiring. If the weather cooperates, the new traffic signal will be turned on by early to mid-April. “All of this is weather contingent,” Sandor said. “We are coming up on the
