Brights practicing pre-need

“The people in Wake Forest have supported us for years. We don’t want to leave them with a company that doesn’t do like we do.” That is Randy Bright’s explanation for the news that their family business, Bright Funeral Home, has agreed to partner with Carriage Services, a national company providing services to funeral homes and cemeteries. The Brights – mother Betty and her sons, Randy and Tommy – are not going away any time soon, Randy was quick to explain. But just as they encourage families to make funeral arrangements before they are needed, they want to make sure someone will be there that they trust when there is a need, which will be “years from now,” Randy said. Other companies and funeral homes have approached them for several years, but Randy said, “There just doesn’t seem to be any compassion” on the part of many firms. It is

Wow! 876 turkeys given away

Remember that there were worries last week when Wake Forest Police Officer M.W. Sattler said there still were far fewer than the 700 or so turkeys the Wake Forest Police Department had distributed in 2014. Last-minute pleas and enthusiastic givers changed that by Saturday, the last day of the turkey and cash collection. Settler reported this week that they had 876 turkeys to give away Monday at the Wake Forest Community House, many donated Saturday. “We collected 182 turkeys Saturday and over $1,500 in donations. Both are record highs for us on a drop-off date. No families were turned away (Monday). In fact, we had several turkeys left over which we delivered to Tri-Area Ministry.” To the generous Wake Forest community, thank you.

Start planning for the Fourth

Yep, we are in the middle of the winter holidays, but it takes a lot of time and work to arrange a two-day, multi-event celebration that brings thousands of people to town. That is why the all-volunteer Fourth of July Celebration Committee will hold an informational meeting next Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. in The Forks Cafeteria on Brooks Street and invites everyone interested in helping or joining them to attend. “This year’s 42nd annual Wake Forest Fourth of July was a successful celebration attended by approximately 5,000 people for the fireworks on July 3 and 3,000 people for the children’s parade and games on July 4,” Scott Yates, a committee member, wrote in announcing the meeting. “The all-volunteer Fourth of July Celebration Committee organizes the Celebration to honor our country and community. The celebration for our neighbors and families is funded by gate receipts from the previous year’s

Shopping center wants to expand

Owners of the Heritage Station shopping center want to expand into the 1.76 acres next door along Rogers Road. Heritage Station, anchored by a Harris-Teeter grocery store, stands at the intersection of Rogers with Forestville Road, and the second local Publix will be built across Forestville in the future Shoppes at Heritage Village shopping center. The request for the expansion is the only agenda item for the Wake Forest Planning Board when it meets Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Wake Forest Town Hall. The town commissioners will hold a work session at 5:30 p.m. in the same meeting room and will return for the public hearing about the rezoning request. The agenda for the work session is near the end of this article. The 1.76 acres has been zoned neighborhood business since WRI HR Heritage Station LLC, based in Houston, Texas, bought the existing shopping center in 2009.
