Still vacancies on town boards

Not enough people have applied to fill all the vacancies on four of the town’s advisory boards – the Cemetery Advisory Board, the Human Relations Council, the Urban Forestry Board and the Senior Center Advisory Board – so the town has extended the deadline to apply to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Wake Forest residents and those living in its extraterritorial jurisdiction may apply. Applications are available on the town’s website at www.wakeforestnc.gov/advisory-boards.aspx and in the town clerk’s office at town hall. Applications may be completed and submitted online. Help kids shop with a cop

The Wake Forest Police Department’s 17th annual Shop with a Cop holiday shopping spree is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 16. On that day approximately 30 area children will visit the Wake Forest Police Department where they will be paired with their police officer “partners.” The kids and their partners will then be transported by bus to the Wake Forest Walmart, where each child will be given $175 to spend on a winter coat and other items of their choice. Parents are encouraged not to accompany their children. Following the shopping spree, the children and their partners will be treated to a pizza party. Shop with a Cop was created to help less fortunate boys and girls in the Wake Forest area experience a joyous Christmas. Academy prepares planning board members

The Town of Wake Forest is seeking community-minded citizens who may be interested in serving on the planning board to enroll in the 2016 Wake Forest Planning Board Academy. The Planning Board Academy is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare residents of the town and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) to serve as members of the Wake Forest Planning Board. Completed applications will be accepted Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. Applications may be completed and submitted online by visiting www.wakeforestnc.gov/planning-board-academy.aspx. Relay seeks volunteers

The American Cancer Society seeks volunteers in Northern Wake County to be a part of the annual Relay For Life Leadership Team. To learn more, visit the Relay booth at the Wake Forest Chamber Business Expo on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Richland Creek Community Church. Local volunteers and ACS staff will be there to answer questions and provide details on joining the fight against cancer. Community volunteers lead and organize each event with the support of ACS staff. Help many with CROP Walk

The 36th Annual Wake Forest CROP Hunger Walk is set for Sunday, November 15. Sign in at 2 p.m. and step off at 2:30 p.m. Now is the time for community organizations to register online to walk at www.cropwalkonline.org/wakeforestnc. Sign up and donate or make a donation to support a walker who has already registered. The walk, which begins and ends at the Wake Forest Historical Museum, 414 North Main Street,  is approximately 1.5 miles on sidewalks that include a view of beautiful historic homes and part of the seminary campus in Wake Forest. Anyone may participate. Volunteers will provide water. Before and after the walk, visit the table where you can write notes of encouragement to members of the local households that receive one grocery bag filled with food once a month from Tri-Area Ministry. Visit another table to write Ministry to Military notes of encouragement to deployed soldiers.

Nominate great people, clubs

Every year Wake Forest people nominate outstanding town residents and organizations for the awards announced at the annual Wake Forest Christmas Dinner: the Peggy Allen Lifetime Achievement Award, the Wake Forest Citizen of the Year and the Wake Forest Club of the Year. The nomination forms are now on the town’s website and paper forms will also be passed out to organization representatives at today’s Community Council meeting. Join the Gobblers Run Nov. 26

For nine years Wake Forest adults, children and dogs have turned out early on Thanksgiving Day to have fun, work off a few pounds and, not as an afterthought, raise $202,610 for the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club. Cat Redd, the race organizer, wants to raise even more money during the tenth annual Gobbler’s Run 5K, this year sponsored by the Jim Allen Group. It is a great way to bring families together, encourage healthy lifestyles and support the community. There were over 2,000 participants last year who raised nearly $40,000. The race begins at8 a.m. in front of the Boys & Girls Club on Wingate Street and everyone is welcome. If you are not up to running, you can volunteer to help with registration and details. Donate now to WFPD Turkey Drive

The Wake Forest Police Department is accepting monetary donations through Saturday, Nov. 21, as part of its ninth annual Turkey Drive. Cash and checks are accepted and will be used to purchase additional turkeys. Checks should be written to the Wake Forest Police Department. Donations of frozen turkeys may be dropped off at the Wake Forest Police Department, 225 S. Taylor St., on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon. The police department will distribute the turkeys while they last on Monday, Nov. 23, from 9-11 a.m., at the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave. Anyone wishing to contribute to this year’s Turkey Drive should contact Officer M.W. Sattler at 919-795-7270. Officer Sattler organized the police department’s first Turkey Drive in 2007. Since then, the department has distributed nearly 4,000 turkeys to needy families in our area, including over 700 turkeys last year.

43 homes, 5 buildings permitted in Sept.

Home building continues at a steady pace in Wake Forest, with 43 permits issued in September for new houses, 21 single-family homes and 22 townhouse homes. In addition, there were five permits for commercial buildings but none of them for retail uses. One was for a large addition to the Electric Motor Shop on North White Street, 6,400 sq. ft. with a value of $550,000. The other four are for office centers on Heritage Center Drive, off Rogers Road between South Main and the railroad line. Each of them will have 6,000 sq. ft. with a value of $398,000. Dan Ryan Builders will build 10 townhouses along new Chatuga Way in the Franklin County section of the Richland Hills subdivision. Wilson Parker Homes will build eight townhouses on Oak Forest View Lane in Traditions, and CH Construction will build four townhouses along Winter Wren Circle in the Caveness Farms subdivision.
