Georgia native named WF manager

Tuesday night, after a brief closed session after their regular agenda, the Wake Forest commissioners unanimously named Kip Padgett as the new town manager. He will begin work on July 6 and his salary will be$145,000. Padgett, 44, a native of Cochran, Ga., has been the city manager in Gainesville, Ga., since 2009 and before that was the city’s director of planning and development and the assistant city manager. He and his wife, Tracy, have two children, Emma, 16, and Cole, 13. Tracy’s family lives near Elon, and in the statement the town released Padgett said they are looking forward to being closer to her family. “We are very pleased to have someone with Kip’s experience,” Mayor Vivian Jones said. “We believe he will fit very well into the cooperative and customer service culture that is such an important part of our Strategic Plan and will be a strong leader

Where’s the money?

Money for local groups such as the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club have been included in the town budget for years, but this year retired Town Manager Mark Williams proposed to fund only three groups and give nothing to the youth club. Two speakers during the public hearing about the budget Tuesday night eloquently spoke for the club and urged the five commissioners to provide funding without mentioning an amount. For the past three years at least, the club has asked for $8,000 with Williams proposing $7,500, which the commissioners have agreed with. Amy Dowdle, a former Boys & Girls Club employee and mother of three children who go to the club, read a letter from her father, attorney James Warren, who wrote that the club serves a number of underprivileged children and “without the guidance and leadership of the club these children, our children, would be lost.” He

Power sale will slash debt

Board approves Olde WF and votes on trailhead Tim Tunis with Electricities had very good news for the Wake Forest Town Board and town power customers Tuesday night, saying the sale of the town’s power assets to Duke Energy Progress will reduce the town’s debt payments by 66 percent and reduce its wholesale power cost by 9 percent. Town power customers will not see an immediate reduction in their bills because former Town Manager Mark Williams included funding for an electric rate study in the budget for next year. The study will be done this summer or fall with any rate changes to follow. The town now owes $1.89 million for its share in four plants formerly owned by Progress Energy; the sale of those shares to Duke will lower the town’s debt to $640,000 which will be paid off over 10 years at 2.9 percent interest. Duke will pay

Growth Rate: What’s on the horizon?

The quick answer: A lot. Developers want to build apartments, subdivisions, fast food restaurants and drug stores. This will be a quick overview of what you might see next. If you have a question about a project or site this article does not mention, send an email to cwpelosi@aol.com. We may see the drug store, a Rite Aid, very soon. Remember last year Heritage developer Andy Ammons was asked why he had cleared the northeast corner where Rogers Road meets South Main Street and he answered it was for a produce stand? Well, there was a Christmas tree lot on the 1.73-acre lot in December. By December of this year we may see Rite Aid. The land is zoned for HB business, which allows that use, and the Design Review Board met to discuss the plan on May 14. The land is owned by Franklin Village, an Ammons company, valued

Fourth a valuable part of town

“When the town of Wake Forest asked residents to define what gives our community its small town character, they identified our Fourth of July Celebration as one of the things that make Wake Forest the charming small town it is.” That is how Rob Mitchell, president of the July Fourth Committee, began a fundraising letter sent to many town residents, giving them the opportunity to sponsor all or part of the event. Sponsorships range from $15,000 – exclusive sponsorship of the fireworks show – to $200 – business name in the program and two tickets to the fireworks show – but people and businesses can also donate smaller amounts to help put smiles on thousands of faces. The deadline to sponsor or donate is June 1. Newcomers may not realize that the town’s Fourth of July celebration, which began in 1973, is not a Town of Wake Forest function. The
