The Wake Forest Police Department conducted a DWI checkpoint in the area of the 200 block of the Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass from 11 p.m. Friday, April 24, until 2 a.m. Saturday, April 25. Officers from the Holly Springs Police Department, Apex Police Department, Cary Police Department, Morrisville Police Department, Zebulon Police Department, Rolesville Police Department, Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Sheriff’s Office participated in the operation. A BATmobile (mobile alcohol testing station) was provided by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ Forensic Alcohol Branch, and a Wake County magistrate was at the site to facilitate processing of those arrested. Representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) were also in attendance. Charges during the operation included six DWI arrests, four other alcohol violations, seven misdemeanor drug charges, and 12 non-alcohol traffic violations. Find town history at the cemetery

The college professors and presidents, the storekeepers and housewives, the soldiers and their survivors may not be able to speak from the graves in the Wake Forest Cemetery, but their descendents and friends will speak Saturday, May 9, during the annual self-guided walking tour at the cemetery on North White Street. The tour will last from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Wake Forest Cemetery Advisory Board. Docents will be stationed at various locations throughout the cemetery to share interesting stories about specific gravesites, as well as photographs of loved ones bearing their ancestral names. Representatives of the Sons of Confederate Veterans clad in Confederate uniforms and carrying Civil War-era firearms will also be on hand to share tales of soldiers who served in the War Between the States. WEMC awards scholarships

Wake Electric has awarded college scholarships to 17 young people in its service area for a total of $22,000. The top scholarship of $2,000, the Fred M. Alford Memorial Scholarship, went to Morgan Darrow who attends Wakefield High School. WEMC offering teacher grants

Wake Electric is now accepting applications for two different grant programs for public school teachers, Bright Ideas and Classroom Technology. Public school K-12 teachers in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, Vance and Wake counties can apply for the Bright Ideas education grants of up to $3,000 for the 2015-2016 school year. Teachers in K-12 public school classrooms with creative ideas for hands-on learning projects are encouraged to apply. Grant applications will be accepted from April 1 through September 15 at 5 p.m. All teachers who submit their applications by the early bird deadline of August 15 will be entered into a drawing for one of five $100 gift cards. Teachers can apply individually or as a team, and grants are available for all subjects. To apply visit www.wemc.com/brightideas.aspx. Strawberries are in season

You know it is spring when you can find strawberries by the bucket and asparagus by the bunch at the Wake Forest Farmers Market. The asparagus season may not last long – an impetus to some to build their own bed – but you certainly will find strawberries for the next few weeks along with spring onions, greens, carrots, radishes and other vegetables. The Wake Forest Farmers Market draws more vendors and more customers every week now that this long winter may finally be ending. You can find it in the Renaissance Plaza parking lot where Elm Avenue meets Brooks Street in downtown Wake Forest. It is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday. Getting from here to there

Four future transit plan options for Wake County are being developed and will be unveiled to the public during a series of “Choose Our Transit” events in May. The Town of Wake Forest will host one of these events in town hall’s ground floor meeting room on Wednesday, May 13, at 6 p.m. The room is most easily accessed via the Taylor Street entrance to town hall. “We are excited about engaging with the public at these events, as well as others that will be held throughout the summer,” said Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair James West. “Public feedback is such an important part of this phase because we want the final recommendation for transit investment to reflect our community’s voice, and be beneficial for Wake County as a whole.” More than 3,900 people provided feedback on the Transit Choices Report between January and March 2015. BBB offers $5,000 scholarship

Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina is pleased to offer the Spring 2015 BBB Torch Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Applications are now being accepted for this semi-annual essay scholarship program which recognizes students who personify high ethics as demonstrated through leadership, community service, overall personal integrity and academic history. To be eligible, students must submit a 400-500 word essay, along with an application, transcript and a letter of recommendation from a BBB Accredited Business. Completed application packets are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Mad Hatter’s events here on May 9

Put on your fancy hat and your walking shoes and join the Wake Forest Garden Club for its annual Mad Hatter’s Tea, Garden Market and Garden Tour. The festivities are on Saturday, May 9, and are at the Wake Forest Historical Museum at 414 North Main Street in Wake Forest. The Tour, Garden Market and Classic Car show begin at 10 am. and go until 4 p.m..  The plated tea will be served from 11 am until 2 pm. Flag-raising will honor Munn

Area residents are invited to attend the 4th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on Monday, May 4, at 11 a.m. The service will be held in Centennial Plaza, in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 South Brooks Street, to honor Anderson “Mitchell” Munn who served his nation in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Members of Munn’s family have been invited to participate in the ceremony which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising by members of the Wake Forest High School JROTC. After raising the American flag, the JROTC will raise the U.S. Navy service flag in recognition of the military branch in which Munn served. Both flags will fly in Centennial Plaza throughout May.
