Keep warm the next three nights

The snow, freezing rain and sleet that began Monday afternoon and continued through early Tuesday morning forced the cancellation or rescheduling of everything from area schools to town meetings. Thankfully, Wake Forest and the northern Wake area escaped without power outages or serious traffic accidents. We are facing three nights of dangerously low temperatures. Bring in the pets – these qualify as three-dog nights – keep a faucet dripping overnight to forestall frozen water pipes (use cold water), check on elderly neighbors and friends or take them a hot meal, and bundle up every time you go outdoors. For all the cancellations and reschedules, go to the town’s website, www.wakeforestnc.gov, where you can find a complete and up-to-date list, which has changed frequently as schools, organizations and companies reacted to conditions.

Town Board reset for Feb. 24

One of the casualties of Monday night/Tuesday morning’s mixed winter event was the cancellation and rescheduling of the Wake Forest Town Board’s regular business meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24, but readers should note the new beginning time: 5 p.m. instead of the regular 7 p.m. Public Information Officer Bill Crabtree said the change to 5 p.m. was made because the board is already scheduled to meet with Steve Strauss of Developmental Associates “to begin sorting through the town manager applications.” Current Town Manager Mark Williams will retire on April 30 after 22 years in that position, 32 years with the town. If you have signed up for Engage Wake Forest and are interested in the town’s search for its next manager, you might want to respond to the current question: “What are the most critical skills and abilities Wake Forest should be

Several laid off at 3 Phoenix

Defense contractor 3 Phoenix, which made Wake Forest its third office in 2010, laid off 24 employees in those three offices last week, according to Executive Vice President Joseph Murray. He did not specify how many of those layoffs were in the Wake Forest office and had not sent a second message with that information by mid-afternoon Wednesday. A letter provided by one of those who lost a job says the decision was because “changing business circumstances do not support the current labor force and thus you are being separated as part of a reduction in force across the entire company.” The letter also says those laid off are employees in good standing who will receive a positive recommendation to any future employer. Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce President Marla Akridge said Tuesday it was her understanding the company had “lost a couple of contracts.” Akridge and her staff

Wow.  IT IS happening.” They have to enlist a great many

Chamber membership drive underway

Around the country, membership in chambers of commerce is dwindling; but things in Wake Forest are actually on the rise. The Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce is about to host an exciting Membership Campaign—“Building Wake Forest.” “Our goal is to bring in 100 new members to the Chamber in just three days,” said Marla Akridge, president of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are the voice for business in the Wake Forest community, and we want our voice to be louder tomorrow than it was yesterday.” Akridge has plenty of help lined up. Along with more than 150 volunteers, Membership180, a Membership Development company from Greenville, SC (www.Membership180.com), has been enlisted to bring their experience in recruiting, engaging and retaining new members to Wake Forest. “The Chamber has done an incredible job of lining up volunteers to help us with this process,” said Jay Handler, co-founder of
