No action on town hall suits, but . . .

The mayor and four of the Wake Forest town commissioners met with Town Manager Mark Williams, Deputy Town Manager Roe O’Donnell, and town attorneys Eric Vernon and Kevin Stanfield in a closed session that lasted an hour and 10 minutes during a special called meeting last night, Sept. 2. The closed session was a discussion and update about the suits filed over the construction of the Wake Forest Town Hall. Commissioner Margaret Stinnett was absent. The special meeting seems to indicate the town and the contractor, Heaton Construction of Roanoke Rapids, have reached a settlement before the suits are to be heard in Wake Superior Court on Oct. 27. After the meeting Vernon said no action was taken, but when asked if there would be action soon as a result of the briefing and discussion, said, “I think that’s a fair statement.” The board may take that action during its

WF couple receiving Anthemion award

Cited for West Pine Avenue neighborhood revitalization Pat Schell and Ellen Turco will be among ten Wake County winners of the 2014 Anthemion Awards during the presentation by Capital Area Preservation Monday, Sept. 15, at the Irregardless Café in Raleigh. The couple will be honored for their work to save and rehabilitate three houses on a short Wake Forest street. “Since 1994, CAP’s Anthemion awards have recognized the best of the best in Wake County historic preservation,” Gary G. Roth, CAP president and CEO, said. “In good times and bad, it is a testament to the good economic value of historic preservation that so many individuals, corporations and municipal governments choose to rehabilitate and reuse historic properties rather than demolish and replace.” Anthemion Awards recognize outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in historic preservation in Wake County. The name “Anthemion” was inspired by a classical design element seen on many

Market moves to the plaza Saturday

On Saturday the shoppers for fresh, natural vegetables and foods will have to go to a different location because the Wake Forest Farmers Market will be in Renaissance Plaza with lots of parking and space for vendors. Last Saturday Market Manager Robin Hendricks was both delighted with the move and anxious to get busy plotting the spaces for the individual vendors. They will be in good company, near the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, Over the Falls Deli, Southern Classic Cars NC and Brooks Street Bowl. Shoppers will find the same friendly vendors in the tents, but now there is room for expansion plus the increased visibility. There will be the same healthy eating, too. The fall crops are coming in – there was bok choy again last week – and also lots of onions, butter beans, black-eyed peas, potatoes and carrots. There is always a wide variety of meats –

VIsit this historic house Sunday

There will be an open house Sunday, Sept. 14, at the historic William Thompson House on the deadend portion of Old N.C. 98 off Old Falls of the Neuse Road. Everyone who loves old houses or Wake Forest area history or anyone who remembers the families that lived in the house when it stood on Falls of the Neuse will want to visit the Greek Revival home. Owner Kevin Kearns, who has owned the house since it was moved and rehabilitated nine years ago, says it will be a wonderful house for someone with a yen for an historic house that is comfortable, livable and stylish. “It’s great. We love it,” but it is the right time in his life to move on. “Somebody else needs to take up the baton.” It is a large house and he added a garage with a full guest house above it. There are

Short board agenda Tuesday

There will probably be additions or changes to the agenda by the time Tuesday, Sept. 16, arrives, but the draft agenda – the only one available – is short without any controversial items. The only public hearing is for a request for contiguous annexation of 30 acres along Rogers Road filed by Iris Stoutt, and it will most likely be continued again because it is tied to approval of the a residential project, The Courtyard at Heritage Grove. The developer wants a rezoning to UR (Urban Residential) conditional zoning where a variety of housing is permitted. There are two pending petitions for annexation. One is for the two acres on Wait Avenue owned by Gould Property Group which recently received approval to develop the land as part of Bowling Green subdivision. The other was submitted by WSR HV (Wheelock Street Residential Holding Village) and ALF (American Land Fund) Holding Village
