Fire station tops CIP list

Wake Forest Fire Department’s Fire Station #4 on Jenkins Road, the subject of heated opposition from some neighbors last year, tops the list of projects for the town in the latest Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) which was made public last week. There will be a public hearing about the $24 million CIP in March and it will be adopted after any changes are made. The fire station is expected to cost $2.2 million, $1,750,000 of that for construction and $450,000 for equipment, a thousand-gallon tension pumper and perhaps a brush truck for forest fires. The additional cost of the new station will be to hire 12 additional firefighters for three four-person crews to provide 24-hour coverage. Fire Chief Ron Early estimates it will take about two cents on the current tax base to provide the $750,000 necessary for the personnel and operating costs. Town Manager Mark Williams has told the

Randall padded accounts both ways

It is usually a rather perfunctory exercise for a reporter or editor to plow through the final campaign financial reports after a town election, but an examination of the reports filed by the Bill Randall for Mayor Committee were rather baffling at first until the pattern became clear. Randall, who lost on Nov. 5, 2013, to Mayor Vivian Jones by an overwhelming margin, 71 to 28 percent, padded his contribution and his expense reports by equal amounts in order to claim he received $9,137.97 in contributions and had $9,007.56 in expenses, leaving him with $130.41 left. Jones, on the other hand, had $1,887.15 remaining in her account in January and donated it to the “We Make People” Campaign at the Kerr Family YMCA in Wakefield. Randall listed his mileage almost daily and added $250 for a trip to Washington, D.C., for a Patriots Rally. All the mileage was listed as

Brief Bits

Due to a lack of business, there will be no meeting of the Wake Forest Planning Board in March. That was the formal announcement. Should you think that signals a slowdown in growth and development, you would be wrong. All you have to do is look at last week’s article, The Growth Rate: Future home/commercial, to see the list of all the projects lined up for future consideration and possible construction. It is just that none of them were at the boil stage by late February to get on the agenda. * * * * A superior court judge’s illness has delayed a court date for a suit with a lot of local interest. Bob Johnson’s suit against the Town of Wake Forest over the parking area between The Cotton Company building and B&W Hardware got underway Monday in Raleigh. Motions were heard and jury selection got underway before court

Troubled by apartment vote: A reader’s opinion

To the editor: The Board of Commissioners on February 18, 2014, approved the Franklin Street Apartment project, an apartment project located at the intersection of South Franklin Street and Dr. Calvin Jones Highway. The “deliberations” for approving this project were exceedingly brief as the Commissioners took less than five minutes to approve the master plan that as submitted. It is troubling that our elected officials are willing to pass project plans with little or no consideration of the issues voiced by their constituents. Commissioner Stinnett should be commended for attempting to openly discuss and debate several areas where the project meets the letter of the law (Unified Development Ordinance – UDO), if not its spirit (The Renaissance Plan). Ms. Stinnett was the sole member of this body to initiate any discussion of the issues and concerns that surround the project. Commissioner Stinnett also attempted to raise a few of the numerous

St. Baldricks? A shave for a cure

On Saturday, March 1, a large number of people who have canvassed friends, family and coworkers for donations will line up in the Millroom at The Factory to have their heads shaved. Silly? Not at all. It is their way of raising money to help find a cure or cures for childhood cancer.
