WFPD arrested 79 for DUI since January

The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) is again warning local drivers not to drink and drive after arresting 79 people for Driving While Impaired (DWI) since January 1. Police say they arrested 23 people in January, 26 in February, and 30 in March.

At the current rate, the WFPD is on pace to record more than 300 DWI arrests in 2025, compared with a total of 128 in 2023 and 243 in 2024.

According to Interim Police Chief Julius Jefferson, Wake Forest Police are committed to reversing this “troubling trend.”

“We have a zero-tolerance policy against impaired driving,” said Jefferson. “Driving under the influence is careless and reckless. It not only endangers the life of the driver, but it can also have deadly consequences for passengers and others on the road.”

He urges community members who choose to travel and drink alcohol to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or by using a ride sharing service.

“Go Wake Forest is free, so that’s a great option,” noted Jefferson, “but even a service you pay for – like a taxi, Uber, and Lyft – are all a lot cheaper than what a DWI would cost or even worse, what a deadly crash will cost you and others.”

Anyone convicted of DWI faces up to $13,500 in legal fees for a first offense, along with the suspension of their driver’s license.

Jefferson says Wake Forest Police officers will continue to be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers.

“Impaired driving is entirely preventable,” said Jefferson. “You have a choice. If you’ve been drinking, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you where you’re going safely.”
