Wake Forest celebrates Juneteenth June 27

Wake Forest will celebrate a virtual Juneteenth on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Northeast Community Coalition, it will begin by a few words from Mayor Vivian Jones followed by several senior community members talking about how things were in the Northeast Community and how it is today. Young adult community members will talk about their vision of ways to improve the community.

There will also be singing and community awards, words from Thrivent, the event sponsor, and words of encouragement from Commissioner Bridget Wall-Lennon and African-American history.

Juneteenth celebrates and remembers the day in June 1865 when the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom. The news came two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and six months after Congress passed the 13th Amendment, formally abolishing slavery.

  1. I don’t have an email, but I would like to thank the NECC for having me to participate in the Juneteenth celebration. It was very well organized and can’t wait till next year. A job well done.
    Sincerely,
