We’re voting this week and next

This year North Carolinians are going to the polls in June – next Tuesday, June 7 – because the General Assembly had to hastily draw new congressional districts and the N.C. Supreme Court voted down the General Assembly’s attempt to keep one Supreme Court justice from facing primary opposition.

All that means there are only three contests on the party ballots. Everyone will vote for his/her party’s candidate for the District 2 congressional seat. The fireworks are in the Republican primary where District 2 incumbent Renee Elmers is fighting to keep U.S. Rep. George Holding from taking her seat. Holding lost his District 13 seat when the General Assembly moved it off to the west. Greg Brannon is the third Republican candidate. Democrats have five people vying to face either Elmers or Holding in the fall: Steven E. Hight, John P. McNeil, Ron Sanyal, Jane Watson and Elton R. Brewington. Everyone will vote in the nonpartisan races for an associate justice on the N.C. Supreme Court and a District 10C Superior Court judge. You will need to show a photo ID to vote.

In Wake County there will be early voting in only three locations, and the Northern Wake Regional Center on East Holding Avenue is one of the three. It opened for early voting today, June 1, and will be open through Saturday. The hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Friday, June 3; on Saturday, June 4, the hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Election Day will be June 7, Tuesday, and the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Go to your regular polling place and take your picture ID.

Just so you know, there are now 667,641 registered voters in Wake County. Of those, 255,634 are Democrats, 185,087 are Republicans, 3,613 are Libertarians, and 223,307 are unaffiliated.
