Town using Nixie for notifications

The Town of Wake Forest is now using the Nixle town-to-resident phone notification service.

Wake Forest implemented the Nixle service to provide town officials the ability to communicate with residents regarding time-sensitive incidents, which may include planned and unforeseen public safety matters.

The Nixle service allows officials to record, send and track personalized voice messages to thousands of Wake Forest residents, businesses and local agencies in just minutes, through a single phone call. The town can also deliver messages to subscribed residents via email and/or cell phone text message.

“We are continuously pursuing ways to enhance community-wide communication and the Nixle service is another tool that will enable us to do so quickly and effectively,” said Communications & Public Affairs Director Bill Crabtree.

Town administrators can target messages to an unlimited number of groups – everything from mobilizing emergency response teams to coordinating efforts with necessary agencies or volunteers. Authorized users also can use a map on theNixle system to contact specific geographical locations, sending messages only to the residents within select neighborhoods when needed.

“With the Nixle service, we have the ability to notify residents regarding important, time-sensitive issues, such as missing persons, road closures, power outages or any other issue that may potentially pose a threat to safety,” Crabtree said.

Publicly available primary residential and business phones in Wake Forest have automatically been included in the system. However, residents can opt-in to provide their complete information, including cell phone numbers and email by visiting www.wakeforestnc.gov/nixle.aspx and clicking on the Nixle logo.

Residents also have the option of receiving text messages only by texting their zip code to 888777.

Wake Forest residents without Internet access can have their information added into the system by calling 919-435-9400. Residents with call blocking services can make sure to receive the town’s time-sensitive calls by adding 919-435-9429 to their approved number list.

Residents who do not wish to receive phone notifications from the town may opt out of the system by emailing their telephone number to bcrabtree@wakeforestnc.gov and typing ‘Nixle Opt Out’ in the subject line.
