Town donates truck to Northern Community Food Security Team

The Town of Wake Forest recently donated a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab pickup truck to the Northern Community Food Security Team (NCFST).

Wake Forest Customer Service Manager and NCFST Chair Andrew Brown Jr. says the vehicle “opens a world of possibilities” in the NCFST’s effort to move Wake County towards food security and a sustainable food future.

“We’re extremely excited about the array of opportunities (the truck) offers, including new ways to assist local food banks and pantries,” Brown said. “For example, Tri-Area Ministry has indicated that it can serve more clients, yet transportation to their location is lacking for many families that are food insecure. We can use the truck to deliver food to those who need it most.”

But that’s just the beginning. Brown says the vehicle will also be used to support the NCFST’s local partners, including the Northeast Community Coalition and Wake County Northern Regional Center, and their initiatives, such as the Summer Nutrition Feeding Program.

“We’ll also use (the truck) to assist with gleaning efforts at local farms and community gardens and explore ways to support composting efforts,” he said.

In February 2018, the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners endorsed Wake County’s Comprehensive Food Security Plan making the town the first in our area to join our area’s local food council, the Capital Area Food Network (CAFN). The plan is designed to move the county towards addressing hunger now and in the future.

The NCFST was created to develop and launch a viable food security plan for northern Wake County that aligns with the CAFN plan. The Wake Forest Board of Commissioners charged NCFST with enlisting community members, food security organizations, resource experts, and other stakeholders to develop activities, policies, and partnerships that will move the county towards food security and a sustainable food future.

Wake Forest Customer Service Manager Andrew Brown Jr. serves as the chair of the NCFST. Other members include George Shaw of Wake Forest Area Hunger Ministry; Ross Yeager, director of the Northern Regional Center; Sydney Klein with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and Capital Area Food Network; and Emoke Anderson with the Northern Regional Center.
