With most forecast models for Hurricane Florence calling for high winds and major flooding, Town officials made the decision to cancel or postpone these events out of concern for public safety.
Once the hurricane makes landfall and continues to the Wake Forest area, it is critically important for residents to stay off the roadways. When residents venture out on the roads, they not only put themselves at risk, but they also put others in jeopardy. Then, if they are involved in an accident, police officers and first responders are at risk. Area residents can help themselves, their neighbors, law enforcement and first responders by simply staying off the roads.
Meanwhile, town officials are urging residents to make these preparations in advance of the storm:
* Inventory hurricane emergency supplies and restock if necessary;
* In case of power outages (and credit cards cannot be used), secure adequate cash to operate for several days;
* Be sure medications (including oxygen tanks) are filled;
* Tie down or bring indoors any objects that might be blown around by hurricane winds (outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, display racks, signs and any other loose objects that are normally left outside);
* Secure all items that cannot be brought inside;
* Ensure that all vehicles are serviced and fueled. Determine where they can be stored during the storm away from large trees that could be toppled by the wind;
* Be sure to have needed supplies for your pets;
* Have a flashlight and extra batteries within reach. Flashlights provide the safest emergency lighting source;
* Charge smartphones, cell phones, power packs and tablets.
