Time for tomatoes?

It may be a week or so too early, but there are sure to be a few tomatoes at the Wake Forest Farmers Market Saturday, and you can still buy tomato plants to raise your own.

There is a lot of green – swiss chard, bok choy, zucchini, green onions, lettuce – along with beets and carrots.

You had better be an early-bird shopper to get eggs these days, but you can find a lot of meat – chicken, beef, pork, lamb, goat and rabbit – from several vendors.

The music this week will be provided by singer/songwriter Joe Woodson. Remember the market does not pay the performers; show you appreciate them by sticking a few dollars in the tip jar.

Also, the market management is looking for musicians who would be willing to play for tips.

Tour the different vendors and admire what they do – the fresh cheese, the locally-roasted coffee, all the breads and baked goods, fresh-cut flowers, knit hats and blankets, empanadas, garlic, peacock feathers, jewelry, garden art.

The veterans in the VFW tent always have a raffle going or are willing to take your donation for the different groups that help veterans.

The Wake County Master Gardeners know the answers to your tough questions about gardening in red clay and heat, and they will give you a soil test kit so you can learn how best to treat your soil.

The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday in the OneCare Inc. parking lot behind CVS which is also a used-car lot. Park carefully and remember pet dogs are not allowed in the market area. There is an exception for service dogs.

See it on Facebook and at www.wakeforestfarmersmarket.org or call 919-671-9269 for information.
