This and that

Have you received your flu shot yet? In this fall and winter when we have a raging coronavirus pandemic in the country it is essential that all people, everyone six months old and older, get a flu shot. It is your best protection against the flu.

Oh, this sounds like fun!

On Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 3 p.m. Triangle pet owners can bring their pets – furry, feathered or scaled – to St. John’s Episcopal Church at 834 Durham Road in Wake Forest to receive a blessing in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology.

This is a drive-through event where all are welcome but please wear masks.

Families may also take socially-distanced photos with “Betsy” the goat. No pets in the goat photos, please. (I am wondering about Betsy. Is it really a goat?)

The blessings will be given by the Reverend Sarah Phelps, the rector at St. John’s. You can ask questions at www.stjohnswf.org.

Four red spirit lilies – also called spider lilies – have appeared like magic in our front yard. My husband says two or three were there last fall so they are multiplying. For years we have had them on a bank beside Friendship Chapel Road.

They seemingly appear suddenly from two or three gray-green leaves close to the ground and are on foot-high stalks. The blooms look like a collection of spiders, and they can be either red (coral) or yellow though ours are all red.

They are deer resistant and have a sweet smell. You can order the affordable bulbs (Lycoris radiate) from any nursery. They will brighten an autumn day.

Traffic alerts on the Bypass and North Allen Road

*From now through November 30, Fred Smith Company, a contractor working on behalf of Wegmans, will periodically reduce to one lane portions of Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 from Galaxy Way to Siena Drive. The temporary lane closures are necessary to allow crews to widen the roadway and install turn lanes for the future Wegman’s. The store will be situated on the south side of Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass between US 1/Capital Boulevard and Siena Drive, just west of Ligon Mill Road.

*Utility Service Contractors, a private contractor working on behalf of the Town of Wake Forest, will close one of the westbound lanes along the Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass from Traditions Grande Boulevard to South Franklin Street Monday Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Crews will also close one of the left turn lanes along Heritage Lake Road onto the Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass. These lane closures are necessary to allow crews to install underground conduit for the Town’s high-speed fiber network installation.

*Moffat Pipe will reduce to one lane with intermittent two-way traffic the portion of North Allen Road from Brewer Circle to Best Street Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. The temporary lane closure is necessary to install storm drain and curb and gutter.
