Time is running out for teachers to apply for two grant programs sponsored by Wake Electric, the Bright Ideas education grant program and the Classroom Technology grant program.
The electric cooperative will give out $50,000 this year in Bright Ideas grants. Educators with creative ideas for hands-on classroom projects must submit their application by Sept. 13. Public school teachers in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, Vance and Wake counties are eligible to apply.
“Since 1994, the Bright Ideas education grant program has provided more than $10.2 million for 9,800 projects benefitting more than two million students across North Carolina,” Darnell Alford, program administrator for Bright Ideas, said. “We are committed to local communities, and we believe there’s no better way to contribute than by investing in the education of our youth.”
Wake Electric and North Carolina’s electric cooperatives across the state collectively have allocated close to $600,000 to give to educators across the state during the 2016-2017 school year.
The grants will be awarded in November for projects in all grade levels and all disciplines, including math, science, art, language, English and history. Last year, Wake Electric awarded more than $50,000 to fund 21 grants for classroom projects.
The Bright Ideas grant application requires an outline of the proposed project, a detailed budget and a description of the benefit to students. Applicants are encouraged to highlight the innovative, creative elements of the project and to proofread carefully. Also, Wake Electric encourages area teachers to apply for classroom technology grants. Eligible teachers include public school K-12 and community college teachers working in Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, Vance and Wake counties.
Grants will be awarded in any discipline for specific technology (for example, computers, digital cameras, tablets, white boards and software). The technology must benefit the students in the classroom. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. For more information, please visit www.wemc.com.
