Tea, garden tips, plants and more

On Saturday, May 10, the Wake Forest Garden Club will host its annual Mad Hatters’ Garden Party at the Wake Forest Historical Museum on North Main Street. The event will include the Mad Hatters’ Tea and Garden Seminars from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; an Art and Garden Market and a Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and the drawing of winning tickets for the Mad Hatters’ Raffle at 4 p.m.

You’re invited to join us for a plated “afternoon” tea and two garden seminars at the Wake Forest Historical Museum. Wear your own “Mad Hat” and receive a free raffle ticket. The seminars will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Karen Diebolt will demonstrate how to make exquisite gifts using colored foam and flowers and Trisha Bell, a local gardening expert, will talk about gardening in small spaces. Tickets for the tea and seminars are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under in advance; on the day of the event adult tickets are $18.

Also, plan to participate in the Mad Hatters’ Raffle. Raffle prizes include jewelry, garden art, handcrafted candles, a cement garden leaf, and gift certificates from local merchants. The prize drawing will be held at 4 p.m.; you do not need to be present to win. Tickets are available for $1 each or 6 for $5.

Tea and raffle tickets are available until May 9 in Wake Forest at The Cotton Company, the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce, the Wake Forest Historical Museum and Lily Mae’s at the Factory.

Additional Mad Hatter festivities are open to the public at no charge. Stroll the museum grounds and browse through pottery, paintings, jewelry, candles, fabric art, and more, all created by local artists. NC Extension Master Gardeners will be available to answer gardening questions and the Wake Forest Urban Forester will be available to give advice on proper tree care. Stop by the Wake Forest Garden Club booth to purchase tea and raffle tickets and enjoy lovely garden art created by club members. Locally grown plants will also be available for purchase.

The car show will feature classic cars owned by local car aficianados who are always ready to talk about their treasures.

Proceeds from the Mad Hatter festivities will benefit the Wake Forest Historical Museum gardens along with other projects supported by the Wake Forest Garden Club. Such projects include bulb planting on North Main Street, gardening projects at local schools and the Flower Cart which creates small floral arrangements each week for distribution to nursing homes, shut-ins and others.
