Swing your partner

Put on your dancing shoes for an evening of family fun as the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department hosts a Barn Dance on Friday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. The dance will be held inside the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave.

The event promises fun for the entire family and all ages are welcome. The cost is $5 in advance and $6 at the door.

Online registration is available at http://wakeforestnc.recdesk.com/.  To register in person, visit the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., or the Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St.

Area youth and adults are invited to sharpen their square dancing skills in the days leading up to the Barn Dance by taking part in the PRCR’s Modern Western Square Dancing class. These classes are offered weekly at the Community House on Monday evenings from 7-9 p.m.

The cost is $10/month for ages 12-18 and $20/month for adults ages 19 and older.

Modern Western Square Dancing is one of the best ways to get your body moving, challenge your mind, relieve stress and meet new and friendly people. Participants will learn to execute basic cooperative dance figures, or ‘calls,’ at the direction of the square dance caller to the beat of the music. After learning the basic skills, participants will be well on their way to enjoying a lifelong hobby to be enjoyed at clubs locally and across the country.

Class dress is casual but participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. Partners are not necessary, but smiles are guaranteed.

Classes are taught by North Carolina Square Dance Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Roberson who has called in 32 states and as far away as New Zealand.

To register online, visit http://wakeforestnc.recdesk.com/. To register in person, stop by the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., or the Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 N. White St.
