Strawberries and much, much more at the market

Good things continue to pop up at the Wake Forest Farmers Market each week, and you can find them all this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the market behind CVS in the OneCare Inc. parking lot.

This week Toxic Free NC, the only group in the state working to put people before pesticides, will be at the market, providing information and techniques for gardening without pesticides. Toxic pesticides are overused in North Carolina and around the world, adding pollutants to our food, our water and our bodies. Remember most of the produce at the market is grown in an organic, pesticide-free manner, and the meats at the market are from poultry and animals who are raised humanely.

There will be plenty of sweet, juicy strawberries on offer along with fresh produce – lettuce, kale, swiss chard, bok choy, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, mixed baby greens, cucumbers, hot house tomatoes, scallions and fresh herbs.

Be sure to pick up some chicken or other meats such as beef, pork, rabbit, lamb and goat. You can buy chicken, duck and quail eggs.

For variety, try honey, locally-roasted coffee, fresh-cut flowers and dried flower wreaths, breads of all varieties, empanadas, sweet rolls, granola and homemade pasta and sauces, jams and jellies and lemonade with mint.

There are lots or bedding plants ready for the garden or decorative pots.

The music this week is by Doppler Effect.

The Wake County Master Gardeners will answer your gardening questions and provide soil test kits.

See it on Facebook and at www.wakeforestfarmersmarket.org or call 919-671-9269 for information.
